How to test a voltage regulator

Regulars will hopefully appreciate this new guide I just wrote so you don't have to explain it over and over again.

    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?p=261329

PS. Same thread also posted on Troubleshooting Computer Displays as some regulars read one, but not the other.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Fantastic guide - will be very useful for newbies.

Only one comment I'd make. The IC at the top is an LM2576T - a switching regulator, not LDO. Testing its output should be done at one end of the inductor - the "680 JYE" component.
Please do not PM me with questions! Questions via PM will not be answered. Post on the forums instead!

Re: How to test a voltage regulator

Uhm... you have there an example of a bad voltage regulator which should output 1.8v but it outputs 3.3v.

Yes, theoretically it's bad but generally even the fixed output regulators can be adjusted to other voltages by adding feedback resistors to the ground pin.

It should almost never happen in real world as these 1117 regulators cost pennies at volume purchases but especially when their output is a popular voltage like 2.5v or 3.3v, one should consider the manufacturer may have used the same part with adjusting resistors on it.

Maybe change the example to say instead of 3.3v something else, let's say 1.2v

...I'll second tom66 to say some regulators are switching regulators, which need an inductor and a diode to work: people should check the diode and the inductor.

Also, some switching regulators need to have the capacitor on the output with a somewhat higher ESR... somewhere around 0.4-1 ohm.

Some people get trained to think anything over 0.3 or so is bad capacitors but that's not always the case and it can affect the regulator's stability if such low ESR capacitors are used. Don't rush into replacing capacitors unless you tested everything and you think they might cause problems.

Retiredcaps, glad you make the write up for the LDO. You may want to add about the two resistors used for setting up the output voltage of the adjustable LDO (that is one way to tell if it is fixed or adjustable LDO), there is formula for it.

3+1 Voltage Regulator for IMVP-7/VR12 CPUs

Compliant with IMVP-7/VR12, the ISL95831 provides a complete solution for microprocessor and graphic processor
core power supply. It provides two Voltage Regulators (VRs) with three integrated gate drivers. The first VR can be

diy - voltage injection possiblity with voltage and ampere regulator - possiblity ?
              by playit
hello ,for diy voltage injector for short killer/finder -- is it possible to use something like this - LM317 DC Linear Regulator, DC-DC 4.5~40V Turn 1.2~37V, Step Down Power Module, Adjustable

and ampere controller along (to make it zero amps ) with some addons(transistors diodes etc.) for it -- and use some 5v adaptor or 3.3v volt rail of my smps power supply as input and finally get 1v and zero amps for injecting voltage to find out short circuit component ? ..
for source input -- can we use 3.3 -4 volt 18550 battery ?( i have some of those ) and then adding ampere regulator...

How Can I test PWM DM0365R?
              by chth96
              Hello
I have power adaptor(220V/input, 12V 1.2A/output) which has symptom of fluctuating output DC voltage between 11.5V-12.2V.
So I opened its plastic case and when switched it on, I heard constant tik tik sound from inside its PCB.
I measured DC voltage between negative and positive pin of the largest capacitor(400v 10uf) and it was measured contant 300V.
I also measured ESR value of all capacitors and I noticed that one of capacitor(KMG 16v 470uf), which located in the secondary side, have high ESR value(10 ohm),So I replaced it with same specification NXH capacitor....

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
              by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

              Assuming...

Help identifying voltage regulator on this concept 2 pm5 monitor pcb board?
              by artvandalai
This Concept 2 rower pm5 monitor doesn't shut down. It keeps turning on and stays on after being turned off. I read on another forum by another user that replaced the same component to check the voltage regulator.
The monitor should pull around 35mA when turned on and in shutdown it should drops to around 0.060mA. Any advice on finding the voltage regulator on this board to check if it needs to be replaced?
