Sony Bravia KDL-40S5100 No Picture, No sound, No Backlight,

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40S5100. Before TV died the HDMI inputs would stop working during certain thunderstorms. But after unpulgging the TV for Awhile the TV would be back to normal.

There was one storm that the TV did not make it through. It also killed the HDMI output of my PS3 and Comcast cable box.

The power does come on. The green power light does come on. The Backlight does not though.

I have tested the Volts on the power supply board where the main board and the inverter board are connected and have gotten the correct voltage.

I have not checked the HV lines between the inverter and power supply board. I have read that these could be checked and also that they cannot. so not sure about them.

I believe I have checked all the fuses on the main board. I tried testing the resistance of the transformers on the inverter board, but not quite sure wether i was testing correctly.

I know i can rule out the TCON board. And I think that the power supply board is good since I get the right Volts on it. So that leaves the Inverter board or main board.

I was thinking of buying an inverter board to see if that will fix it, since it is the cheapest on ebay. but I dont know if i can completely rule out the power supply board. I also dont want to buy a inverter board and a power supply board just to find out it is the main board.

I am unsure how to proceed at the moment,

Any assistance would be greatly apprecitated.

I can see the pics first one -is great but second one needs to be better for troubleshooting. We also need the backs of the boards - try not to use flash as it obliterates the detail

Does the green power light stay on and if so can you connect up a source and see if there is a very dark image of it - perhaps using a flashlight at various angles.

Can you list the fuses you have checked in case we spot any more and assume you have checked them.

"I tried testing the resistance of the transformers on the inverter board, but not quite sure wether i was testing correctly." Hmm! im not sure how to test those either but if you check the resistances on the ends with two pins and list them T1 T2 T3 etc and see if there are any odd ones

Do you have soldering equipment and can you use it?


EDIT HT Cable - just examine the ends for damage and test for continuity and shorts

Any Audio also any clicking hissing sounds

Thanks for the replies and sorry for the long absence. Other hobbies and lack of money kept me from pursuing the fixing of my tv.

I was just going to order another Main Board, since that is most likely the problem, since i get power and cannot get any sound or video.

This led me to another problem though. looks like someone else had the same issue as i might be having now.

I have a Sony kdl-40s5100 with:

LCD panel : LTY400HA12
T-con : NP_HAC2LV1.1
Power supply board: 1-878-598-11
Inverter Board : SSB400W12S01
Main Board : 1-879-020-12

I recieved the TV free from Sony to replace my 50" Sony Wega with a bad optical block, so it might not be the original boards in TV.

All the information i can find online shows me that a 1-879-020-11 board should of been in the tv to begin with.

Should i get a 1-879-020-12 or 1-879-020-11 to replace the probably bad Main board?

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a Sony KDL-46SL140 also go bad on me. It is a 46". When I opened it up the main board, (BM5 in my case, yours is a BM3) was for a 40" KDL40SL140. I think the only real difference was that mine was a larger screen. Everything else was the same as the lower screen size model. The manual even has both models on it.

I looked at the -12 on shopjimmy and it is a known part for the 46S5100 and you have a 40S5100. I think you are running into the same thing. The parts are somewhat interchangeable even if there is no documentation as such. If nothing else, the -12 is for a higher end TV.

You always want to replace the same exact board number that you pulled out that was working, so go with that first. But if it comes down to availability of the part get what you can. For the life of me I really do not recall if I got the 40" or 46" BM5 for my TV and I really do not want to pop it open to find out. I am 90% sure I got the "wrong" one because it just was not available anywhere.

This board here: http://www.shopjimmy.com/sony-a-1727...dl-52s5100.htm shows the 1-879-020-11 in the upper right and it is for the 52" version of your TV. I found that one by typing in the -12! Sometimes I really hate Sony boards.

So long story short, get what you can find for this master model maybe different screen size and see if it works. Just make sure the numbers match up as close as you can and it looks EXACTLY the same. But just cause it worked for me, it may not work for you.

I was going to order the same exact board that i had in the TV, the -12,
but i seen that the -11 was much cheaper on ebay and started questioning which one i should get.

The -12 was $135, while the -11 was $65.

If nothing else, get the 11 and if it does not work.... sell it on ebay!

Sonys are usually very picky. In some cases, the serial number is used to determine which board is appropriate. That doesn't seem to be the case in your situation. I also don't see the "12" listed as a suitable replacement anywhere.

I went with the -11.

Now i'm just hoping it is only a bad main board.

I guess i'll find out soon.

I put in the -11 and the TV works great now.

hi guys
i have kdl 40s5100....
and i want to change or add led backlight....
the problems im having is to find the right volt to connect the led strip
the led strip runs on 9-12 volt...
im thinking about the cable from the power board to the inverter
any advice

I don't think you're going to find a 12V LED strip that will be bright enough to work like you're expecting it to work. Why do you want to convert it to LED anyway?

where did you get the led strip?
