    LG 42LX6900 42" 3D LED TV turning itself off

    Hi GUys,

    A friend of mine has asked me for advice about his tv turning itself off.

    It is an LG 42LX6900 3D LED tv 18 months old and out of warranty.

    I haven't seen it but he describes the problem as being that the tv switches on ok, works for about 15 minutes then just switches itself off. He unplugs it, then it powers up ok and again after about 15 minutes it switches itself off.

    My first response was its an LG thats normal - he didn't see the funny side

    Anyone come across this before?
    As its a thin LED eco power model - is this likely a power supply or mainboard problem?

    Thanks,

    Mark.

    Things to check:
    - Does backlight work during failure?
    - Does sound work during failure?

    Bulging capacitors... LG have had really bad problems with them before so could easily be them but seen qute a few TVs on this forum (mostly Samsungs) with bad BGA bonds... this essentially means you need a new main board as even reflows won't fix it.

      Right, have spoken to him and;

      It switches on as expected, the led goes from red (standby) to green (powered on)
      After around 10 minutes it just switches off, led goes from green to red, no sound no backlights - like you just turned if off.
      If you leave it then after some time - around 10 minutes it just switches itself back on - led goes from red to green and it works ok.
      Then it goes through this cycle.

        My guess would be BGA or caps, but not a clue otherwise! Would need to perform some tests to check.
