Need advice on good replacement caps.

    Hello,
I have a Philips/LG LCD TV with a bad power supply. It started to give off a burning smell and the video eventually failed after a couple of days. I know the caps on the power supply board are bad and want to replace them with a better brand if someone could help point me in the right direction. any help would be greatly appreciated.
these caps have the same values but are different sizes (same height, different diameters)

    TV model: 47pfl3603d/27
    board part# plhl-t722a or 2722171

sorry, I can't upload images? files are <500K. I'm using the manage attachments "utility" and it seems stuck on "uploading files, please wait".

the caps are SAMWHA 2200uF 25V. one cap has "RD" next to the manufactures logo and the other has "WB". both are 105 degrees Celsius.

The Samwha datasheets are at their site. They're not so easy to get to because they have them set up in an animated flash catalogue. If you can't find "WB" series, it's because it was replaced by the "MK" series.

I have the old WB datasheet if you're interested in PDF.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Follow the instructions in my sig file exactly.

If you are new to this forum, we can help a lot more if you please post clear focused pictures (max resolution 2000x2000 and 2MB) of your boards using the manage attachments button so they are hosted here. Information and picture clarity compositions should look like this post.

We respectfully ask that you make some time and effort to read some of the guides available for basic troubleshooting. After you have read through them, then ask clarification questions or report your findings.

Please do not post inline and offsite as they slow down the loading of pages.

Click on Go Advanced, then there's a button there in the toolbar called "Manage Attachments"... looks like a paperclip.

The pictures have to be smaller than 2000 pixels , width or height.. and size should be below 2 MB if I remember correctly

PS. I've grabbed the Samwha datasheets a while ago and posted them here: ftp://helpedia.com/pub/temp/datashee...et%203/Samwha/

What you're looking for is probably in the 12 MB catalogue or Miniature.pdf or Large.pdf

so how long does it normally take to upload with a good ISP connection? my file is .jpg 448KB 1600x1200. it just says "uploading files-please wait". i usually wait 5min then kill it.

Thanks PCBONEZ, that's them. Is there a better brand I can replace them with? This is a common issue and I would hate to replace junk with more junk. thanks again...

Re: Need advice on good replacement caps.

You didn't give dimensions so I can't make specific suggestions.

                    Any Japanese brand with:
                    - the same or less ESR [aka Impedance @100kHz]
                    - the same or more Ripple.
                    .
The common ones are: Rubycon, Nichicon, Chemicon, Sanyo, Suncon, Panasonic

                    ~
The RD are General Purpose [GP] caps so you won't see ESR/Impedance listed.
[Also rated at 120Hz instead of 100kHz and the correction factor isn't given.]
Use some entry level low ESR caps for those such as Chemicon LXZ, Pannasonic FC, Nichicon PW.
                    [There are dozens actually.]

WB [meaning MK] are equivalent to KZE, ZL, HD - based on their Ripple.
KZE, ZL, HD all have MUCH better ESR so that's not even an issue this time.
[Double check the specific cap. Differing can sizes can screw the cross reference up at times.]

                    This will help.

                      Also:
The Ripple and ESR are related to the can size [not uF and volts].
                      .
So if the physical size of the cap does not match what is shown for uF and volts in the data sheet then [in the data sheet] find the closest cap with same physical size as the one in hand and use that Ripple and ESR as what you are looking to match or better.

Sorry for going a bit off-topic, but could it be that the "electrolytic list.pdf" is somehow damaged or in a non-standard format? All I get when I try to open that is "Couldn't render the page" in Sumatra PDF.

Hi PCBONEZ, sorry for the long delay with this reply. I'm having trouble finding replacement caps with the package size and ripple. I've checked mouser and digikey but can't seem to locate. Here are my part specs... they are all Samwha brand..

RD- wide temp range (-55~105C), General Purpose.
                          2200uF / 25V / 12.5x25mm / 1235 ripple

                          WB- ultra low impedance
                          2200uF / 25V / 16x25mm / 3460 ripple

                          WB- ultra low impedance
                          2200uF / 50V / 16x25mm / 3460 ripple

                          WB- ultra low impedance
                          1000uF / 35V / 12.5x25mm / 2770 ripple

                            1) UCC SMG 25V 2200uF 12.5x25 1540
                            2) Panasonic FR 35V 2200uF 16x25 3820
                            3) Please double check this one... If this really is a 50V 2200uF cap, turn on the TV and check the voltage of the cap. Most likely it is not actually drawing 50V so you might be able to use the 35V cap above.
                            4) Panasonic FM 35V 1000uF 12.5x25 3190

                              WB- ultra low impedance 2200uF / 50V / 16x25mm / 3460 ripple

this would be hard to match. 90% chance you don't need 50v rated, they just used them for the higher ripple and lower esr.

                              These will work :

If you can go 18mm in diameter or up to 32 mm in height, there's more options:

http://search.digikey.com/us/en/prod...445-ND/2433579 (a bit lower ripple but close enough)

sorry, the 50V is incorrect. it's actually 1000uF. that's the one i'm having a hard time finding. it's in a good spot on the board though and dimensions are not that important but i would like to keep the length under 35mm.

                                WB- ultra low impedance

Sorry. The only series I know of that can match that spec is Rubycon ZLJ... It says "no longer available" at Newark... The closest thing that has a slightly lower ripple is Panasonic FM Ripple is 3320 vs 3460.

edit: WB was relpaced with MK... Most likely the specs on the MK datasheet are more accurate than those on the WB sheet... MK datasheet lists the 16x25mm 50V 1000uF cap ripple at 3114... So you're perfectly safe with the Panasonic FM as a replacement, in my opinion.

^ Correct, FM would be fine.

If you don't find FM, FR is just as good, it's an updated FM series. Same 3320 mA ripple, 0.016 ohm

No. In fact it's taller than FM for some capacity/voltage combinations.
