    3 little 'uns

Got given three small LCD tv's today, all "disposable"

    Beko 20"
    Matsui 20"
and a Tecknika 19" with onboard DVD player

All are stuck in standby, the Matsui appears to have some faulty FETs on the PSU board, the Tecknika has two 1000uF 25v bulging caps labelled J.d
The Beko has a wall wart type PSU which I havent had a chance to test yet.

Will post some pics when the parts arrive for the other pair.

This TV repair lark is addictive

A friend works for a charity, they dump all the "donations" that come in not working. I happened to mention to him a few days ago that I was keen on getting hold of a few non runners to play with. He offered me these, said it would save him taking them for disposal

In all honesty, if I get these going cheap I will probably give them back to him, im more interested in learning about repairing them than making money from it.

I told him I will help him out next time he has some going for disposal!

I wondered what they do with dud donations. Honestly I would prefer if they were sold to TV repair companies or individuals - raise money for charity and keep a lot more stuff out of the dump.

Yes, I believe this is one of the great things about this website, and
the whole world of electronic repairs, is that we end up saving a lot of stuff
          that goes into a dumpster.

Indeed, with any luck there will be a constant stream from this plalce and as a thankyou I will return some back to them for free. It's a win win situation

Parts arrived today for the Technika and Matsui - replaced the two 1000uF caps in the Technika psu. Put the old ones marked J.d on the esr meter, showing over 45 ohms!

The inbuilt DVD Player not working, doesnt appear to be spinning the disk.. will look into it (not literally) when I have more time. Apart from that, the set is working well - it even has a dvb-t tuner!

Also got the Beko running, replaced the wall wart which was reading 18vdc on the meter with a good 15v psu and have a real nice picture on it.

The Matsui wasn't so straight forward.. will start a new thread on that one :-)

Wow, a miracle that the TV would have ever functioned with caps nearly that bad...

Very common with Technikas, no idea on how to fix it though, but I see a lot of Technika DVD & TV combis that have faulty DVD players.

Many inverters will shut down on overvoltage; if the inverter used the V+ directly, then it might appear to shut down with >15V. 15V is probably too high; most are designed to work with 12V.

If it's a Vestel chassis, god help us all.

On the bottom of this Beko it says 15vdc. I was running it off a variable voltage bench PSU set for 15v. Turned it down to 13.8vdc and it still runs, the benefit of that is I can leave it connected to the PSU and still run my radios

A little 15" LCD I have (found it) is rated for 12V. Sadly, only works down to 11.2V (below which the screen starts flickering rapidly), but is perfectly happy with 15V. (Full of 16V caps, everything else rated to about 20V.)

Bad spindle motor. all too common on those cheap POS TV's.

Give the CD/DVD a spin with your finger just after you inserted it... it should start working. If so, there's a dead spot on the motor.

                        Hi Scenic,

Thanks for the reply. I think you maybe right. The dvd was moving like the motor was trying to spin and stopping 3 or 4 times.

I will try your tip tomorrow when im next in the workshop.
