For me personally, being a field systems tech (vs. a bench tech) for so long, I'm not where I'd like to be with component troubleshooting without schematics. If I have a schematic, I'm ok - just ok, lol.
I've worked in both worlds. When I worked on TVs schematics were usually available, and the circuits were functionally very similar. I moved to electronics production where schematics, parts lists, and parts were readily available, but the type of failure was radically different. Locating solder shorts is an art in itself. TVs have progressed to the point where it can take hours to analyze a circuit. Even if schematics are available, tracing a signal line across three pages of a PDF is more of an exercise in frustration than instructive. And schematics for many subassemblies are unavailable.
