    Dell NPS-110CB bad?

I had two Dell Optiplex GX150 systems come in today marked "dead".
I plugged them in and both give me a glowing standby power led on the board and a blinking front light but pressing the power button does nothing and one of the PSUs give off a squeal.
I would open the PSUs and look myself but I can't seem to figure out how on earth to get them out of the case. I see no screws or clips anywhere.
Is this model known for badcaps or is it just something else in the system?

    Is this SSF

Push down the thumb green lever hard and push PSU foward at same time.

This is 815 chipset with memory in the AGP slot. PIII and coppermine celerons only and supports 100 and 133mhz but not tualatin support, 512MB limit. Meh. Chassis is slot & hook style for mainboards. Not ATX design. CDROM notebook drive is 24X.

The squealer meant southbridge blown. Not exactly a bad caps PC. I have this PC as well. It's not used much for this reasons.

      Re: Dell NPS-110CB bad?

You sure it would be the southbridge?
I unplegged the PSU and it still squeals so it is from the PSU.
Also, there are no green clamps short of the handle that pulls off the PCI riser card.

EDIT: 512 and coppermines is not a problem. All I seem to find are coppermines and Windows 2000 is still plenty happy with 512Mb

Squealer PSU's have a habit of blowing southbridges.
Depends on exactly -why- PSU is squealing too but that's a common symptom/result scenario.
Doesn't mean it's blown yet, just that it might be.

Well I'll see how much damage has been done once I figure out how to remove this blasted PSU so I can look inside. Also, you said that this thing takes a notebook cd drive? :s Mine seem to use regular IDE drives.

Didn't say what kind of form factor, mine is SFF version of GX150.

Is the back covered in plastic, or is there a catch in the chassis near PSU?

By the way, you can test run with a ATX PSU in these GX150.

I have the SFF however it uses regular CD and floppy drives (though that does not matter here).

Can anyone help figure out how t get the %$^@#ing PSU out? I can't seem to figure out how to remove it. I'm also trying to remove the side skin to look for screws but I can't get that off either.

I have a question does PSU rattles in it's place if you wiggle, pull/push in and out as if it like it was only trapped without any screws?

All the Dell machines SFF machines I have or had were kept in place with a catch. No screw.

There are actually 3 GX150 form factors.
                        SFF, Small Desktop, and Tower.

There is no green lever or tab. From the sides I can see, there is nothing holding it in place.

Screw this. I'm going to tear the whole damn system down and find out how the hell you remove this PSU.

Turns out this is held in place by a little latch like mentioned but it was not even clearly marked and it was jammed until I took the skin off and cleaned out a few pieces of wood that were in the system (this apparently came from a wood shop).
I'm looking at teh caps now.

Well the first one had two large Teapos for the primary caps and the secondaries were Nichicons and Ltec caps. None were bulging but I can't seem to figure out how to manually start the PSU up yet when not pluged into the system so I'll have to check the pinout.

The other PSU that was squealing also had two Teapo primaries but all the secondaries were Ltec. Plugging it in while disconnected gave me a constant squeal and again the caps were not bulging. Manually starting it also gave no response.
It's also to note that both PSUs were made in early 2001.

Now, DID you try the mainboards with a ATX PSU?, pin out is same.

Anyways, trying a spare ATX PSU did work and the system POSTed and booted up into Windows NT. So this means that the PSUs are the problem and I now have two more systems to fix and setup for Folding@Home.

You'd better double check that with Dell<->P3.
                                    Some are, some aren't.
With P4-up you are okay that way.

I have checked. It is with the newer P3 like in GX150.

Because, I have a dimension 8300 and GX150, both slots and hook style boards and same mainboard trays, 8300 is a P4 and GX150 is P3 and share same chassis designs and I did test run GX150 in the 8300 case before and I did use ATX PSU on that GX150 as well. The 8300 uses ATX PSU.
