    Need help identifying this part

    HI people,

This is from a led strip power supply and I don't know what is is. Please help me identifying this part.
On the PCB of the power supply there is the letter L1 under that part.

    Thanks in advance.

it could be a gas-discharge tube.
used to get them in crt tv's

It looks like gas discharge for surge protection, the circuit should still operate without it.

It is actually a fuse. I have been seeing these in chinese PSU's; kinda looks like a lightbulb, but it's a fuse in a glass case. Similar in size to a Picofuse.

Ha, I found it as a "3x10mm Quanbofeng Fuse"

i'v seen one of those, but it didnt have the orange ends
            anyway why "L" designation?
unless it's for "lamp" and it's actually a current limiter like in late valve stuff.

We need to see the whole board to verify for sure.

                Here are the requested photos.

If it is a fuse, with what kind of other, more common fuse, I can replace it?

                Thanks guys.

Chances are, it was meant for a filter inductor but like a lot of cheapened PSUs it's replaced by a link of wire... in this case, a fuse was used instead?

At least they thought about safety...

buchman, can you post pics of the PCB other (trace) side, so we can confirm the part.

Something smoked near the (missing?) mains filter cap C8 and R11. Why is the part cracked? You can see the filament has melted.
Any circuit should have a fuse first, but it looks like "L1" is in the middle of the primary circuit; an afterthought to stop your house from burning down...

Re: Need help identifying this part

                          Hi guys,

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Here are the right pictures (I hope)

And this is the full story...

One day the led strip stopped working, I opened it and found a blown 10uf capacitor and burnt resistor. I desoldered them, tested with a DVM and confirmed what I saw. I replaced them, connected the power supply to the Wall socket and it Burned immidetly. Then I suspected the transistor.
Since there are a lot of types and kinds of transistors, I don't know how to test them yet but, I have orderd the transistor I suspected. The day it came, I bought another transistor for the TV I am trying to fix (with no luck so far) and, I confused them and soldered the wrong transistor to the power supply for the led strip
Offcourse it burned immidetly and blew the FUSE that I opened this thread about.
And that is the whole story.

Thank you once again and hope after this project may be you can help me with the TV power supply (I think it is a power supply but not sure).

Now, what kind of more common fuse can I use there? because that one is only in china and I don't want to wait a month and a half for the delivery or if you can just tell me how many amps do I need for this circuit and I will buy something similar.

                                Thanks again.

I'm guessing that PSU puts out 10-15W and those fuses come in 500mA and 1A, 2A up sizes.

I would put in a Picofuse/Microfuse or a 5x20mm pigtail fuse if it can fit. I think you have the height. Standing up with insulation/heatshrink around it, so the endcaps do not short to nearby things.

It should be 1A or less, oversized a bit to take the capacitor inrush current.
                                  I would put in a 0.5A to 1A.

Check Q2 for shorts too, I think you said Q3 shorted.

the same way you check anything else,
there are 3 possible combinations to check.
                                      pins 1-2
                                      pins 1-3
                                      pins 2-3

Could you be more specific? I am a newbe.
On what side do I do that? the trace side?
What do I need to choose on the DMM? OHMS? volts? diod mode?

And the most important, where are these pins located?
I do know how to use the DMM, just need some guidlines.
                                        Thanks for the patient guys.
