    ATX Psu 12v rail undervoltage

    Hi all

I have an old delta electronics atx psu in the 12v rail output 10v no load when i connect a load voltage go to 9v-9.5v i have opened the psu the capacitors looks fine. Please help me to trubleshoot this psu.

Bad caps can look normal, you need to check the capacitance and the ESR of the caps.
BTW, other Voltage rails are OK?

      Hi

      Thank you for reply

All other rails are fine only 12v rail is undervoltage i have changed the output cap of 12v rail and nothing has changed the cap was 16v 2200 micro farad and i dont have an esr meter.

Maybe the 12v rectifier is bad

It might regulate the 5V output, so if there is low/no load on that, then yes the 12V will be low. Try loading the other outputs as well.

i would say replace any small caps near opto-isolators incase the feedback is the problem.
it could mistake ripple for actual constant voltage.

                Hi

Thank you very much this was the problem i connected a dvd rom and measured the 12v rail the voltage was 11.6v i connected a 5watt resistor between ground and +5v and the 12v volt rail is 11.6v.

11.6v is still a bit low...

I had a really old Enermax PSU which had this behaviour too, low voltage rails without load, which I had never seen before on an ATX PSU - all other ones I've seen keep the voltage in spec even without a load.

It worked OK for about a week or two, then the PWM controller (UC3842 or whatever) exploded.

Re: ATX Psu 12v rail undervoltage

If it's a really old PSU that kind of behavior is normal for some designs. Prior to the Pentium 4 and later model Athlon XPs, most motherboards had the CPU VRM powered by the 5v rail so there was always load on 5v, and 12v was mostly used just for hard disks, CD-ROM drives and fans.

Lowest possible resistance on laptop motherboard rail - Guide Table request
                      by Nagy Daniel
Hi, I'm Daniel, and I'm new to the world of repairing motherboards.

I would like to create a table, or more likely a guideline about the voltage rails and their possible resistance rail.

I know that the motherboard design has a very big depend on the rail's resistance, but I would like to know what is the smallest value for a rail that can be acceptable. For example, I heard that some new gaming motherboards can have 0,5 Ohm resistance on the GPU rail, but on an older type, it could be a sign of a shorted GPU rail.

So, I generated a table with AI so I can...

Calculating ESR from tan delta -- tan delta's dependence on capacitance
                      by Junkrepair
I'm finally recapping my Soyo K7VX6 motherboard (aka KT600 Dragon Ultra) and replacing Sacon SZ-series caps. The Sacon SZ datasheet provides a spec for tan delta, but not for ESR, while the candidate replacement caps are specified in terms of ESR.

I found this nice little description of the conversion:

                      Calculating capacitor ESR from Tan(delta)
                      https://forum.digikey.com/t/calculat...-from-tan/2633

It mentions that a general spec for tan delta has to be adjusted for the specific capacitance before plugging tan delta into the formula...

                      Hello everyone,

I'm trying to repair my old Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-54-55T5). I've already bought a new laptop, so this is more of a learning project. For the experience, with no high expectations of success.

Well, my decice specs are the following:

                      Model: Acer Nitro 5 AN517-54-55T5
                      CPU: Intel Core i5-11400H
                      GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
                      Motherboard: GH51G LA-L181P Rev:1c

                      The symptom:
When pressing the power button, the power LED lights up for about 5 seconds and then turns off. Initially, the issue was intermittent: sometimes...
