    Thermaltake: Toughpower QFan 650W (W0163) & Toughpower PSH 700V (W0105) need recap!

There are some Samxon GF, bad or going bad there.

Otherwise, not bad, but the heatsinks block the airflow. Someone should have thought that..

Thermaltake Toughpower PSH 700V (W0105) photos and datasheets:

This is not modular. Btw look at this:

    Thermaltake Toughpower QFan 650W (W0163)

Bad 5vsb cap. Also some of the small caps have very high esr and need to be replaced like the other thermaltake.

It will be a pain in the ass to recap those psus without removing the heatsinks but I think I can do it.

They are indeed a pain to recap without removing the heatsinks, but I have done it before. I figured that, since they are double layer PCBs, it would probably be just as hard to remove them.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Looks like a CWT PSH design of olde...

Looks like the only difference between the other rebrands and this is that Thermaltake used off-brand caps whereas the others used Japanese caps. Still have one (Xigmatek NRP-MC751) going strong.

The modular cables are not compatible with Seasonic modular PSUs because they are keyed differently.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Do you think it would make sense to cut off the overhanging parts of heatsinks?

no, because that would reduce their surface to air contact and thus cripple their cooling capability

Well I'm thinking that perhaps the fan would do a better job, if the fins weren't obstructing the airflow?

The fan would do a better job for the caps and other components but not for the silicon attached to the heatsinks..

This Q-Fan system is badly designed. The psu is supposed to inhale air from the side openings of the psu case, but it ends up putting out air from there, reducing the airflow that cools down the psu...

I fan modded the psu with a 10kohm resistor in parallel with the thermistor. I couldn't use a lower value resistor, because then the psu would assume that it is too hot and the fan would keep spinning even when PC is off. This is an interesting design.

Would it be possible to straighten the fins without breaking them? They look a bit fragile..

Those slots are plain self-sabotage, they destroy any static pressure. There is a strong reason why impellers need to be shrouded:

I'd seal the slots with tape and replace that unshrouded crap fan with a real one.

I tried to bend one and it broke

As you can see in the picture this helped me change the 3 small caps underneath. The whole procedure required patience and using more than 1 tweezers simultaneously.

First you have to take out the orginal caps, using tweezers. Then you clean the holes with the needle trick. Then you try to place the new caps, using tweezers and a screwdriver if necessary. The long leads of the new caps help a lot!

                          Bad 5vsb cap.
Is that the one at C39 ?

I was given a Toughpower 750 Qfan in non-working condition

                          Had a bulging OST RLP 2200uf 16v at C39

Replaced it with a Panasonic FJ 1800uf 16v recycled from forgotten defunct motherboard - closest I had which would fit

                          Now the Toughpower works

Certainly is a pain in the ass to work on - replaced in situ with the main PCB tilted to one side, like doing keyhole surgery
