What I found at work today...

Got called out to a camera (CCTV) fault today - customer report was 4 cameras offline in the same area.

This is what I found when I opened the PSU (an Elmdene 12v, 3A boxed unit):

Personally haven't heard of that brand of cap myself but I've flagged the job for a follow-up to replace the PSU with a 5A unit (I've always specced 1A per camera myself and although the draw on this *should* only be 2A judging by the resistance reading on my meter you have to account for impulse currents when the IR lamps switch on).

There was a layer of soot in the bottom of the case too and the output volts were reading 3v (I didn't even bother checking the ripple!).

hmm it was a sad looking unit before the pop, look at that not even a bridge rectifier and is that spring supposed to be ground?
also the small blue cap under the "incap" is popped to, its not feasible to repair mainly because the "incap" thats 8800㎌ cost the same amount as a new power box.
      not good!

You must have a sad, sad boring life if you hate on people harmlessly enjoying life with an animal costume.

Sometimes you need to break shit to fix it.... Thats why my lawnmower doesn't have a deadman switch or engine brake anymore

This problem means High voltage going to shorting main diode and busting main caps. should be test diode. caps, switching transistor. but before you test, you must connect Ac lamp 100 or 80 watts in fuse holder. If the bulb is bright still short component if the board

They are cheapo units TBF, we never repair them - their bigger units do have a proper bridge in them IIRC.

The spring isn't a ground contact though, it's a tamper (case open) switch for connecting the unit to an intruder alarm system - grounding is via the regulator heatsink (the Alu part wrapped around the PCB).

Missing components are for a fault relay that isn't fitted in this particular model (the back EMF diode screenprint is visible near the relay output terminals).

Looks like that "incap" has turned into an "outcap".

Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.

                  Repair Success! Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP
                  by valvashon
Yesterday I successfully repaired a Middle Atlantic UPS2200R-IP that had inadvertently been used as a surge suppressor at our transmitter site. It has already been replaced with an updated one but it's coming home with me now instead of being e-cycled. To be specific, this is the MA model that has the blue backlit display and has been discontinued, although this design may have been used in many UPS units including the smaller Middle Atlantic ones in this series.

Here's what happened: We experienced a brownout/surge at the site, which damaged the UPS and took our broadcasting...

                  Hofmann geodyna 6300 Wheel balancer
                  by Grouickman
                  Hi there,

First, I'm not sure it's the right section to post for this type of device, but could not think of something better.

Ok, so my son (a mechanic) bought a faulty Hofmann Geodyna 6300 wheel balancer (which appears to be mostly a re-branded Snap-on wheel balancer).

I'm looking for any resources (doc, manuals, schematics) that would be available for this device or anyone that would have any knowledge on this particular device (or its Snap-On equivalent).

I'm trying to diagnose the fault(s ?), but I can't find any schematic (appart from the...

Aiwa Z-R700 Music System has very low power when switched on, dim lighting and nothing works
                  by pecman
I was given an Aiwa Z-R700 from the 1990s era to look at by someone who said the twin tape deck did not work. The whole unit unit powered up ok but there was nothing from the tape deck. I had a look and found all the belts broken, I replaced the belts and then put the tape deck back into place and it still does not work. Also when I now power up the unit all the lighting on the front is very dim and the cd player and the tuner as well as the tape deck do not work. I have checked all the connections and ribbon cables again, there are no burnt or swollen capacitors. Maybe there are capacitors on...

Sony RCD-W3 Deck A (Playback only) not playing CDs (Disk Error) repair
                  by goodpsusearch
Recently I was given for free a Sony RCD-W3 with the following symptoms, CD recorder drive reads CDs without any issues (haven't tested recording function yet because I don't intend to burn CDs on that machine) but the reader drive shows disc error after some seconds of it trying to read CD. Tried both CD-Rs and commercial audio CDs with same results.

First thing to do was to clean the lens but that didn't change anything. Googling the issue revealed that this is a common issue on several Sony CD recorder machines and the culprit is SMD electrolytic caps located on the PCB bellow...
