    430W (Ya Right)

    Just opened up the power supply to my Sister's computer to check it over before installing a new (compared to her old setup anyway) Socket 754 system into the case.

    It is an @-Power "430W" power supply. Looks like maybe 250 to me.

    Anyone heard of Koshin caps? It has mostly those along with some Su'scon caps.

    I was going to switch it out for a Sparkle supply form another system, but I opened that one up and it had bulging caps and was only rated for 6A on the +12v rail anyway. At least now I know why that other system was flaky.

    My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

      Looks like a Tosin knock off, who by themselves are nothing to rave about.

        Looks like a Deer/L&C, including the 3A rectifiers on the +12v rail - probably closer to 150W-200W.

            Yeah. I've seen lots of Koshins. Interestingly enough, I've NEVER seen them on the primary.

            Speaking of Su'Scon, BadCaps has tainted my mind for life. I was in my wife's class room and looking down into the backs of the iMacs (you know how they're semi-clear and you can see the motherboard, PSU, etc. all laid out.)

            I was observing how Apple used Su'Scon caps in them. LOL!

              yeah, mee too.

              su'scon in an iMacs? wow. i thought the only right place for those caps are in deer craps and the like. i recall there are some reports about failed su'scon in this forums...

              it is still a v1.3 ATX PSU, so it has a weak 12v amperage. looking at the pics, maybe those two single diodes that set together in paralel are used for 12v rectifiers (or maybe for 3.3v). that is a very cheap solution. a fast/smooth response schottky rectifiers diode are more preferrable and normally always be used on every decent psu. so this psu isn't normal , i wont be surprosed to find another cheap solution on this POS.

              2x 330uf primary capacitance is not normal too for PSU > 400W. it should have more than 2x 470uf (or 680uF). the bridge rectifier is made from 4 single diodes. that feels cheap too. a normal chip bridge rect should be used (rs405, gbu806 or the like).

              the fan is cheap too. and if i get a >400W PSU, i would expect to see a lot of 3300uf caps on secondaries, not less (1000uf or 1500uf ones is a no no).

              are they fuhjyyu or jamicon TK/TM? some old fsp based psu use fuhjyyu craps. HEC's too.

                I opened up my mother's 235w Hipro last night. (circa 1999) Two Hitachi HP3 470uF 200v input, what I could see on the output was...surprise...Su'Scon. It was like being handed a box of chocolates, and then kicked in the nuts.

                Not entirely sure if it's properly functioning. I'll test it out this evening.
                You know there's something wrong when you open up a PSU and are glad to find Teapos.
                Why I don't buy cheap cases!

                  After reading this thread I just _had_ to look inside my iMac... it's one of those older G3 ones with a built-in CRT monitor, not LCD. It's also very hard to get the case off it! Opening up the RAM/expansion card cover, I could get a good look at the caps on the logic board - they appear to be Chemicon KZG. No visible bulging or venting yet, but you never know... I'd check the caps inside the CRT part as well, but that is almost impossible!

                  I wonder if Apple is using cheaper caps inside their new iMac and MacBook computers, to cut down on the costs?
                  You know there's something wrong when you open your PC and it has vented Rubycons...

                    on the iMac G5 they were using mostly Nichicon HN if you recall. Pity about that cos those boards looked awesome not cheap.

                        Me neither - I've seen them only in PSUs, both on the primary and secondary side. I replace them on the secondary side as a matter of routine, but I haven't seen a single bulged or obviously failed Su'scon. I'd guess they're at the same level of quality as a CapXon, Teapo or OST - not terribly bad, but worth replacing as a matter of abundant precaution.

                        A Hipro is almost always worth fixing - its ratings are honest, so 235W will be 235W after a recap.

                            A particular brand of PSU?

                            Could be like Antec and Fuhjyyu's. Not that Fuhjyyus aren't bad, but put them in an Antec with a 900RPM fan and it's like vinegar and baking soda.
