Power Supply Problem

Greetings! I have 500w power supply, the problem is when I connect it to the motherboard it doesn't give power to the motherboard nothing happens but when i connect the green and black wire from the power connect it turns on I see the fan running. Can you guys help me? Thank you for the reply and sorry for bad english.

Test the motherboard on another power supply, there might be a problem on the motherboard.

When you jump start it, check The voltage of the grey wire on pin 8 (PW_GOOD.

Often in the beginning of a capacitor problem in the PSU, it can turn on and run with no load but can't stay stable with a load (motherboard, etc, connected) so it shuts off within milliseconds after turned on. Take the lid off the PSU and look for bad (vented) caps.

@ben7 I tested it on another motherboard but it still not give power.

@selldoor the motherboard i used is P4M900-T and MSI 7525. well the power supply i bought is the generic type. it says on the sticker "RISE"

Hi I see RISE is a common make/label in the Philippines. Did you just buy it new
is it still under guarantee. Picture of its label and the connectors might help

I found a old power supply. It has the same problem. and I saw this. Is this causing the problem? and what part is that? I dont know what it is called.

I dont see anything wrong in the picture- try one less close up

The coil part is a Toroid Inductor or Choke. They are usually very stable and
do not cause problems. My guess it has been damaged by association with other components possible the ones on the heatsink. Or it has had liquid spilt on it when working.

That would be an iron powder toroid. They can be used for power filtering and in boost and buck converters depending on exactly what material they are made of and how the wires are wound around the core. Similar in operation to a transformer but yet at the same time quite different.

When a power supply dies as in manner of the picture you have shown, its pretty much ready for the garbage because even if you could find a suitable replacement the power supply is likely to have many more serious problems.

About the other PSU you pictured. It's a generic brand (Rise) claiming 600W that seems very low quality. Look at the bridge rectifier diodes, they are 3 amp rated at most. <> 600W

Even if the unit is operating within its intended design capability, it may simply not be able to supply sufficient inrush current to get the system rails stable in time on power-on.

Your best bet is to abandon both PSU and find something that's better quality.
