    Antec Phantom 500 power supply

Found this in the garbage and just had to grab it.

Tried to power it on but no sign of life at all - after reading about Antec power supplies and the use of Fuhjyyu caps I thought for sure this was the same story.

Opened it up and saw these really nice blue caps - pretty much all the nice blue caps has vented.

They are Mucon MX(M) and the psu is filled with them.

8 more Mucons on this side - even the gray 25V is a Mucon but of the LQ(M) series.

I must say the quality of the psu itself seems good except for the caps. It's very well organised, seems very clean as I can see only a few places with old fluss.
I am working on a NorthQ psu and the circuit board is a mess and looks like shit compared to this one.

Maybe this is a psu worth saving.

But first of all , Do you have datasheets for the Mucon MX(M) and LQ(M) series ?

Was thinking replacing these with FM series but if I remember right they are not as sleek and thin as the Mucons and will most likely not fit.

You could use Panny FK series, as I know that they have a 3300uF 6.3v in 10mm diameter. So does Topcat in Samxon RS

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

That's a beautiful design... Yea, I also was considering Panasonic FK instead of Samxon RS, but the problem is that Newark is the only one who carries FK, and their shipping is outrageous.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

Personally, I do prefer panny over samxon, simply because samxon are taiwanese, although FK doesn't have a 3300uF 16v in 10mm like samxon RS, only 2200uF 16v and 3300uF 6.3v

Here are some more pictures with cap sizes too, they are quite big so let me know if I need to scale them down.

In addition come the big primary cap, have not had look at it yet.

Found this test of the psu. As you can see it has two primary caps but mine has one.

Re: Antec Phantom 500 power supply

33 Capacitors?! Is it even worth fixing? Cause if you figure like $1.50 per capacitor, you're pushing $49.50 which is near the price of a new power supply.

Yes, thats right 33 + the primary one.

I'm wondering the same thing, it might not be worth fixing - have not decided on the outcome yet.

depends on his location.. cap availability and stuff..
                      1.50 per cap? what?!
by the way... this is a semi-fanless PSU. i kinda doubt you could get a decent one for ~50$

edit: depending on gabriel's location.. i'd take it if he decides not to fix it

I had a look and I found no semi fanless psu's in shops here in Norway, it seems this psu is around 5 years old now.

If I decide not to fix it you can have it for the cost of shipping.

Well I just threw $1.50 out there cause I figured with a power supply you'd want high quality caps, cause if they failed again they could take out your other computer hardware. Plus keep in mind I'm talking $1.50 USD :P Could try dumping it on ebay as well, people are paying rediculous prices for broken stuff. I'm trying to get a few LCDs and people are paying $20-50 for the LCD, but then there's $20-40 shipping and handling. I saw a 19" widescreen go for $90 broken!

What's the problem? It's an antec- that stupid troll antecrep claimed that's 'normal.'

                              Mucon?! MOOCON

Rip that garbage outta there already! They may have earned a reputation for cases years ago, but antec has become infamous and synonymous with 'the plaque.' I'm not even sure it WAS a plague in that sense. More like mass conditioning to get everyone 'used to' bad caps. Put some FCs, PWs, or even PMs in there and shove nails through the fakes.

c_hegge and 370, even HKFAC is better that that! How about thoss 'ilo' things disguised as TVs, full of DCON caps? Like the rat poison. Sorry, ratdude
