PCBONEZ - Once again, you have come to the rescue.
Question - for small GP caps, should I use Panasonic KG as you recommend or Panasonic FC which is a "marginal" GP cap and has slightly better but usually equal ripple suppression than KG but is less expensive I think?
Also what does Quasar mean when he says not to use dissimilar caps on a filter input/output? I'm a little confused, because I often see a mix of GP and low ESR high value caps on PSUs. How can you tell what is a filter input/output?
Here is a comprehensive list of almost every single capacitor on the PCB (Except for the primaries which probably don't need replacing and the daughterboard, which I believe only has coupling capacitors, and where I can't get to anyway, otherwise I would have replaced them too).

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
Okay.
I have no cap numbers. Just a map with values/sizes. Is it (EC26) the 10uF/50v, 5x11?
It doesn't have 3300uF's out there. 4700uF/6.3v are the originals.
The only 3300uF (original) is the 16v one next to the fan control board.
[EDIT]
I know I've done this one before as I have a pre-edited picture ready for it...
It is *NOT* a cap I replaced. There is no need.
[EDIT #2]
ah-HA!! Found it!
https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8403
The reason for not changing it is a few posts after the pic.

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
Mine is an SP-450P but that side is the same.
The cap in question has negative lead towards heatsink..
.. IOW it's reversed from EC26.
Interesting that the silk screen for the cap in question looks like a resistor and is labeled R98.
Now I know why you didn't just look at the silk screen for polarity...

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
I *know* this question came up before somewhere in here. Damned if I can find it now....
NEG towards heatsink. This is the 0.22uF/50v cap that was lying on its side, yes?
WTH is a EC26?Leave a comment:

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
This happened *while* I was doing the cap map.
Thanks very much. Yes, the model is an exact "SP-450".
I've got a $50 gift card with Mouser's name written on it, and I'm gonna order caps for like 6 PSUs I've been meaning to recap for years now. Plus I will put those Samxon RS to use.
-Just a correction. It's not one of only two 5mm caps. There are more on the board. What I meant to say that it is one of the two 5mm caps there.Leave a comment:

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
This is why we do cap-maps.... hehehehe
If this is still about a SP-450 I -might- have one out in the store room I can look at tomorrow.
What is the exact model number?

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
There's a cap behind EC26 which is 50V 0.22uF. As I was desoldering it, it fell out and I have no point of reference as to the polarity. Is the polarity the same as EC26 or is it the opposite?
EC26 is to the left of all the 3300 caps behind the big coil. It's one of only two 5x11mm caps.
If someone can check, I would be grateful. Thanks.Leave a comment:

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
De-soldering braid works too. I find that if you remove the solder with the PCB upside down, the cap just falls out.Leave a comment:

Ahhh....
Curved or right-angle 6" Surgical Forceps.
New caps have long leads so putting the new ones in should not be too difficult with those tools. Typically available everywhere. Get the Pakistan made ones not the China ones if you can.
Time to build up your tool box!
Also, a stick with chewing gum or similar sticky on the end works too.

EDIT: UCC KY or Pana FC works fine there.Last edited by Toasty; 01-09-2011, 12:43 AM.Leave a comment:

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
I've met somewhat of a trifle in trying to get to two 4.7uF 50V "TN" caps underneath one of the heatsinks. (Thanks PCBONEZ... You say these should have been TM, I will replace them accordingly)
As far as I can comprehend, I need to remove the heatsink to get to it. No problem... the heatsink is only held in the PCB by two pins. My problem is that the mofsets are screwed into the heatsink... The only way I can think of doing it is wicking away all the solder from the mofsets pins so that they make no contact with the PCB when I pull out the sink, or using some sort of extreme right-angle philips screwdriver to unscrew the mofsets from the sink...
Here are some photos to illustrate what I'm speaking of.Leave a comment:

Gentle coercion of some output coils and wire bundles may be necessary to fit the caps. A little soldering iron applied to allow them to move slightly in their holes either sideways or up a little. The 2200uF at the board edge is the toughest and to get the cover back on.Last edited by Toasty; 12-27-2010, 03:50 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
For 4&5mm 50v caps under 10uF I get Panasonic KG from Digikey because they have better Ripple than most other options.
At 10uF the 50v KG hits 6.3mm and might be too big so from there up you need to shop a little.
Sometimes digikey is cheaper, sometimes Mouser.
Just depends on what the order is.
Sometimes you have to go to both to get every size you need.

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
I have -this- PSU that I recapped, so if you have a problem sourcing a cap just say so.
I had to split the order between Mouser and Digikey at the time. Now it might be fully doable from Mouser.

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
Thank you very much for your response Quasar.
I didn't originally intend on changing out the smaller 50v caps but somehow PCBONEZ managed to persuade me to fully recap it and I thought it was a good idea (but at the time I didn't realize I couldn't get 50v caps from TC). So now that I'm at the point where I've pulled out 90% of the caps already, I might as well follow through with what I started. Due to this choice of recapping everything, I want to get every cap from the same source (digikey most likely), hence my choice in FMs for the outputs.
I remember seeing a thread somewhere grouping similar grade caps together.. I'm see if I can find it now so I can try to figure something out.
At this point, I don't really care how long it takes me to get this job done, I just want to understand what I'm doing and why I'm doing it. That way, I won't be asking so many questions next time and maybe I'll even be able to answer someone else's questions somedayLeave a comment:

Re: Replacement caps for Antec SP-450?
Had to run off, so I couldn't elaborate more on the filter and cap bit.
Using different ESR caps on the filter in/out can cause an increase in ripple on the output. Staying with either PW/PW or FM/FM (or any other comparable cap grade in pairs) is the way to do these filters. I've done these with FM, PW, FC, HZ, HE, PM, KY, and LXY on all the outputs and never had any problems. Loaded ripple was <30mV.
FM's can be cheaper and now I noticed Mouser is starting to stock them. Some even less expensive than Digikey.
The "problem" with FM's is that the higher values are in 12.5mm cans, so it's a tough fit. Creative movement of wires and surrounding components and in most cases you can make them fit.

by black6hostGood day!
I have a Samson Resolv studio monitor that has no sound output. I've opened it up and found two caps that are bulging on what I believe to be the power supply section of the amplifier board. The board is marked Resolv 65A AMP V1.2. The caps in question are YUSCON, 2200uF, 35V, 85C temp and have markings of RA(P) and are 16mm x 25.5mm tall. I've attached the schematic and the caps in question are C5 and C6. I'm assuming they are low esr caps. I've tested both caps and they test low uF, nowhere near 2200uF.
I'm going to replace the caps and I'll be the first...-

by reweaseHi everyone,
There actually was a time when early SMPS and late bakelite housed electrolytic caps coexisted in high end industrial gear. A friend of mine just got himself a CNC milling machine form that time with its first set of now 41 year old caps still installed in the PSU... and it's malfunctioning.
Two of the caps have already leaked slightly onto the board. I have not desoldered or measured any so far but they should qualify for replacement.
Now I'm wondering what to put in there as a replacement. First idea was state of the art low-ESR Nippon KY,...-

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

by crosswindsHello,
So, pulled a motherboard out from storage, was working when put away, wont post when I took it out of storage today.
Since it was working, and it looks to be essentially time that killed it I figured its a good idea to replace the caps before digging further.
Looks to be only good quality caps on this board, so might not be the issue. But it is closing in on 20 years now so, wont hurt i guess
Its a ASUS P5VDZ-MX board.
I would really appreciate some assistance on what the best replacement caps would be for these:

by HectoPascalHallo,
i want to replace two smoothing caps from a heating controller PSU. They are probably 30 years old and it might be time to replace them.
SXE 470uF 63V 105°C (tested: 472uF 0.35Ohm) --> Nichicon VY 105°C - 463uF 0.15Ohm
SXE 470uF 25V 105°C (tested: 422uF 0.63Ohm) --> Samwha K5A 85°C - 446uF 0.10Ohm (or Panasonic RAD FC 470/25 8mm)
I couldn't find anything about 'SXE'. That's the only declaration on the caps. Edit: The top/bottom ident says Nippon CC.
Nichicon should be 'VY' series (linked).
I couldn't find anything about Samwha...-
