The heatsinks are usually connected to ground. Note "usually". A friend has an UPS that says on the board "The heatsinks are not grounded and present risk of electric shock. Test before touching." This is something that you should ALWAYS do on any heatsink in any high voltage device.

I've gotten zapped quite a few times myself, and it was always due to carelessness. So watch your fingers mkay?

tbh i thik smartpower are junk, truepower are the good ones.
    i have both.

the only reason i have not scrapped the smartpower is because it's a modular case and i cant bring myself to scrapping it.
that could change - every time i look at the size of the cap-list and the cost of the fet i get the urge to switch the iron on and get the electric screwdriver out!

why would they do a squeal after recap? has a component be damaged by the bad caps?

ill have to be more careful about having psus plugged in and i now know not to touch the heatsinks
i didnt fly across the room, it wasnt that dramatic, but it felt RELLY weird

also, i have some other resistorsthat i will look at the spcs and see if they will be helpful in this project!

will an empty psu case create enough airflow?

I'm also working on mine. Got a case sorted and the heatsinks, as well as a few of the load resistors. Just got to get the rest of the resistors and some good thermal epoxy to stick 'em to the heatsinks, and some switches so I can turn certain resistors on and off to adjust the load and I should be done.

Oh, and about antec smartpowers, I NEVER re-cap them. I just scavenge the heatsinks and fans and whatever else I decide might be usefull and junk them. They always make a really annoying high pitched squeal after the re-cap.

You can use multiple of those minimum load resistors in parallel, strap 'em to a heatsink and watercool them (ie toss them into a bucket of water). They don't take more than 10 minutes at a time (then you'll have to change the water), but should be enough to help you figure out a thing or two.

As for "the black things", the diodes (the ones on the secondary) aren't suitable, the transistors maybe, but they have too low current capability for 12v use, they are designed for mains voltage and relatively low current compared to the output of a typical PC power supply.

Don't worry, i haven't aborted my load tester project. I'm soon to receive a FREE big heatsink and i already earned bout $80 more, so it should be completed in about a month.

the case, the fan and the black things could be used to create a load of some kind.

Hey, i hav a queation for you the_unique (too lazy to put the 3s in there), are any of the components inside a psu suitable for any part of the psu loader?ive got a coil or 2, 2 small resistors, and a bunch of those black things that were screwed to the heatsinks. And of course i Have a few of the salvaged heatsinks. I also have the completely empty case of a hipro atx psu where i could put the stuff into. Would that work??? Thanks!

@ everell: Nope, took it apart entirely. I thought i said already i decided it's not worth fixing.

Stj-do you still need the coil? I have one that may be the one youneed nyou can have it free...

Does it have the same colors? Toroids are color coded, if it's another color, just use the Micrometals calculator to determine if it is suitable and how many turns you have to wind.

or keep the modular case and bin the rest!

tbh i only kept it because it had modular cabling, a recap & rebuilding the pfc area is gonna cost a third the cost of a new 400w corsair!

That means the coil got super hot. It caused the coating on the coil wire to get brittle and crack. The coil then shorted, which caused the FET to short.

If nothing else is available, take the output toroid transformer off a junked power supply. Remove all of the windings. If core is same size, wind a new coil on that core. Perhaps not best, but I have done it and it does work.

because the internal resistance of the fet (about 7ohms) was enough to let it cook without blowing the fuse for a while!

i found a core the same size in something else - not a psu.

I don't get why the fuse of the psu or the house short switch did not go down.

Then it only happened for a short period of time right? There's no need to worry in that case.

it got hot because the fet shorted and put it across the supply rails!!!!

Well get yourself that inductor calculation software off Micrometals' site, and it'll tell you what you need to do to it so it doesn't get hot.
