ASUS A52JB LAN issue after BIOS upgrade

    Hi folks,
I have a laptop ASUS A52JB which has lost any LAN capability after a bios upgrade.
Everything works fine unless the eth. Any OS shows the same issue: network not present.
Unfortunately there is no way to restore back the old bios.
    The motherboard is K52JB

Do you have any suggestion for this problem?

    Thank you for your help

Might sound stupid, but have you got the right date and time set?

Sorry, last answer was intended for someone else!

Maybe the update has disabled the LAN options in the BIOS - that would be worth checking. If all is ok in the BIOS, I'd be checking the network card in the device manager. If it shows that it is not working, you can uninstall it via the device manager, then when you reboot it should reinstall itself automatically.

        Hi Taxman,
        Thank you for your reply.
I guess the problem is somehow related to the bios upgrade since it appears to be a problem of many other users who have experienced a BIOS upgrade in such laptop.

Obviously I have reloaded default setup from F10 function key, the LAN is enabled but still unavailable either in windows or Linux.
Interesting , the chip which controls the LAN (jmicron jmc251) also controls the card reader, and it is working fine.

Could be any number of issues. I'm no expert but I've run into network problems a few times so I'll share a few ideas with you in the hope they might help. You sound very knowledgeable so I suspect I'll be telling you things you already know but I'll fire ahead anyway just in case.

I'll take it for granted that you've already tried to reset your modem. You could also check to ensure all the necessary services are running (particularly TCP/IP) but I can't see that being the issue given that the LAN isn't working in linux either.

Any idea if you have a valid MAC address? I've heard before of BIOS updates leaving the MAC address being recognised as a string of zeros rather than the proper number. You can check this and other network settings by opening a command prompt and typing:

          ipconfig /all

Note above that there's a space before the slash.

The MAC address is the one that says 'physical address'. If it's zeros then it's not being recognised properly. Disabling and re-enabling the card will normally sort that but I assume you've tried that already.

You could try releasing and renewing the DHCP lease:

          ipconfig /release

          then

          ipconfig /renew

The renew won't work though if the network is not being found at all.

You could also do a loopback ping to test the TCP / IP protocols by going to the command prompt and typing:

          ping 127.0.0.1

If you get an error message, that indicates that the TCP/IP protocols are not set correctly. You'd then be looking at having to set the protocols in the network connection settings.

I'm not convinced though that any of these routes will sort your issues given that it isn't working in linux either, but hopefully these ideas might get you on track...

            taxman,

the fact that the lan is not being recognized, you wont be able to get any info using ipconfig.

what you are trying to discuss is a network connection issue, contrary to stated issue.

Yes, the LAN is like a not available resource after a bios upgrade.
I am thinking to replace the whole board, the jmicron is the chip just in the middle

Re: ASUS A52JB LAN issue after BIOS upgrade

                Hi folks,

I have just discovered an important fact: by interacting with the OS it is possible to resume the ethernet port!

For some hidden reasons, the BIOS resets the MAC address to FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF, an invalid address which makes impossible to activate the card at boot time. Infact by forcing the interface with a valid hex address, the resource becomes available and it can be used as usual.

Now the point is how to cheat the BIOS...

With ASUS, not everything is quite so simple. I will show you my way. It may be longer or harder but it is the right way to do it in my humble opinion.

For example, you can have 3 similar ASUS motherboards, all being the same model, all of which will have different BIOS versions.

I will give you an example and my version of preparing BIOS from ASUS website and in the process I am always cleaning Intel ME while doing it so you have fully cleaned BIOS, no DMI data, no password, nothing.

This is the picture of 3 similar ASUS motherboards, all of them being X555LD...

ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI - BIOS Help
                  by grimacelord
                  Hello,

I have spent the last hour on this and I guess this is just over my head, so here I am.

I have an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard here that needs to have the BIOS updated in order to accept the latest CPUs.

The BIOS chips seem to come as a set of two: GD25B64ESIG and GD25B128ESIG. My guess is one of them is a fail-safe for the main BIOS? I really don't know. Or one of them is ME and other is BIOS? I don't know.

Anyway, I took dumps of both chips and then downloaded the latest update for this motherboard from ASUS's website...

Hi all, I've spent the past week digging through the forums and guides to try correct my foolish mistake of changing hidden settings while tinkering around, and to be honest my heads overloaded so I'm hoping you'll be able to help.

I used a tool called 'Smokeless-UMAF' to access usually hidden settings in the bios. I tweaked one or two 'safe' things but made the mistake of tweaking a lot of settings under 'USB/Thunderbolt Configurations' when I didn't know what they did. For...

                  ASUS TP500LA BIOS request/repair/merge?
                  by jbonavita
Hi, my laptop wont boot at all
With original bios no POST, only LED lights
With alternative BIOS from model TP500LN (flashed via programmer) the notebook works again
                  Some issues
                  A- with bios from 500LN, it won't update from bios of model 500LA (from 500LN v203 to 500LA v300)
B- If updated from 500LN version 203 to 300, the battery stops being recognized

                  Things I tried

1- Update / clear ME: Took the non working bios, made a backup, and did this: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...theory/trouble...

Hey guys, I got this model which stays black screen but CPU heats up. All voltages on board seems oK.
                  Perhaps BIOS issue?

                  Model: F1502Z

I have flashed this BIOS for test purposes and it lights up the ASUS but blank SN. https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubl...21#post3593121
