Liquid Metal Thermal Paste + Alienware = KO

    Hey guys !

    Funny one to share.
What would be an IC replacement due to conductive thermal paste, revealed to be something more...
Long story short, owner contacted for burned IC due to thermal paste accident, and when I put my eyes on it ... sweet god!
Theres this liquid thermal paste everywhere under the chips... GPU, ram ic's...
    So sad...

Someone had some kind of similar case?
Can this be blown off with compressed air or something? or only way is lifting the BGA's?
I can lift the ram chips and reball, but I dont have BGA machine for the GPU for ex.

    Photos for some fun!

    What a mess!
    ahahah

poor machine. its the 2018 model, 1070 and i7

    Thanks for any inputs!

Re: Liquid Metal Thermal Paste + Alienware = KO

how much he put in it ? i see video of how to apply it and u need to stick some quantity both gpu and heatsink... not only gpy to make it stick btter and not flow away, then suck all the excessive quantity.clean whole board , replace that burnd component and hope it wil work again

    good luck

ps: i think there is some liquid solution to make that liquid thermal get away in an easier way eithout the need to reball every single chip... more u work on the board ( reballing reflow) more u can get trouble.

      Well it flew everywhere...
What worries me the most is the part under the gpu...tried to remove it with tweezers and alcohol...not good enough...its really sticked under it.

I wont do BGA reballing as I dont have the station, so Im debating if I should even try something...or just give it back to the owner.

What would be the liquid to clean this? The owner sent an email to the thermal paste support , but still no feedback.

      What a mess

        yeah. too messy for me.

hand it over to the owner with no repair.

That sh#$ was everywhere under the chips.

        Next!

Laptop overheating after replacement thermal paste
          by Veyron7887
Hi. I have Asus X55C laptop from year 2013. It has i3-2328M CPU. I replaced stock thermal paste with high quality thermal paste. Before thermal paste replacement, I measured CPU temperature Around 65-70 degrees Celcius with stock thermal paste. If after the replace thermal paste, I measured CPU temperature around 80-84 degrees Celcius and fan don't stop when system is idle. I replaced the thermal paste several times but still did not change. Where is the problem?

How to clean Liquid Metal from under CPU?
          by silver60618
Hi all, Im working on a board, that my customer brought to another shop, and smeared liquid metal all over the board.
The laptop powers on, then shuts off. I noticed traces of Liquid Metal near the edge of the CPU, but I fear some maybe underneath.

Has anyone ever tried Ultrasonic cleaning, or compressed air to remove or agitate the liquid metal?

          Can thermal paste cause corrosion?
          by caspian
          Dear members,

I have got an ordinary gray thermal paste that has no name/model on the box.
I put some of this thermal paste on a 128-pin QFP IC. A bit of this thermal paste was put on pins of the IC.
I tried to clean the pins by thinner but the thermal paste cannot be cleaned from the pins properly. because the pins are tiny and the thermal paste is stuck between them.
Is it possible that the thermal paste damages pins of the IC in long term by creating corrosion or something?
Is it safe to leave the thermal paste on the pins?
          I guess the thermal paste...

          Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....
