Dell Latitude 120L (WISTRON DK1 MB) - no battery detected

    Hello there!

I have a problem with and old laptop I got hold of.
It charges the battery and works off of it, but the battery itself is not detected in BIOS (no battery installed) or OS. It is a genuine DELL one.

The AC adapter is recognized as 60W.

The voltages on the battery connector (with AC on, no battery)
    2 - 3.3 (PBAT_PRES)
    4 - 3.3 (BT_SCL_R)
    5 - 3.3 (BT_SDA_R)
    6 - 15.8 (and goes down)

With AC adapter on + battery
    2 - 0 (PBAT_PRES)
    4 - 3.0 (BT_SCL_R)
    5 - 3.0 (BT_SDA_R)
    6 - 12.2 (and grows)

I am working on the diagram from
    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-DL...RbuZ9j1Kt/view

    I checked R525, R526, R524, R189, R190
    diodes D2/D3/D16
    capacitors EC59, C270.

    Still no joy :|

What else can I check guys?

Take a look at the I2C Bus (SDA, SCL) with an oscilloscope if you have one.
I'd bet that battery is dead.

It is not detected but it still works off it? What does HWINFO say about it?

      Have you checked BCC1 ?

Re: Dell Latitude 120L (WISTRON DK1 MB) - no battery detected

When is I2C comm supposed to happen? I looked with a mini osc at SDA & SCL while connecting the battery (no charger) - no activity. When should the BIOS talk to it?

The laptop is disassembled now so I cannot boot it to the OS, but from the Linux kernel message I remember acpi system reporting 'battery absent' during boot.

        I couldn't find BCC1. No boardview here

But I do remember from the measurements, that between 'after' the R524/525/526 and GND there was steady 0.6kohm and capacity of 186nF with R524/525 and only 4nF with R526. Hope you know what I mean Can this rule out busted capacitor on these lines?

With charger connected, there's loads of activity on SDA&SCL pins. Will yet have to hook up logic analyser to see what the messages sent are. Still scratching my head as to why BIOS would not see the battery...

I hooked up the battery to my arduino and ran SBMInfo. It seems the battery operates fine on the logic level:

            START D:\downloads\tmp\SBMInfo\SBMInfo.ino
            Version 3.1 from Nov 22 2019
Found attached I2C device at 0xB

Hello, I have a customer that brought this laptop in after replacing his battery. He said his original battery charge was not lasting long, and after replacing the battery with one purchased from iFixit, the charging worked for about 30 minutes and then stopped, and the battery is no longer detected by windows.

This laptop powers on when the AC adapter is connected, and my USB-C multimeter shows current being used with both ports, but the charging light does not come on, and in Windows the battery icon shows an X as if there is no battery present. If I disconnect the AC adapter,...

ASUS X571 no power : battery issue?
              by mkdj
              Hello everyone,

              Mark and model: ASUS X571
Symptoms: not turning on. There is only the LED battery indicator working. The owner of the laptop told me this problem arrived one week after having changed the battery. He then managed to power on the laptop only once, and then it never powered on again.

              Tests already made:
              - Battery is charging when laptop is plugged in. The LED battery indicator turns white after a couple of hours of charge, indicating that battery is fully charged. However, laptop won't turn on anyway, with or without AC plug.
              - I have removed...

              by grimacelord
              Hello,

I have a A2338 MacBook Pro here that came to me because the battery wasn't being detected. The owner tried to replace the battery themselves thinking that the battery was the problem but the behavior continues even with their new aftermarket battery. They also accidentally ripped off the black plastic clasp to the battery flex cable connector @ J5151, but I pulled that off of a donor board and replaced that for them already. I did quickly check to see if that was simply the problem, but it's not.

First thing I checked was I2C_SMC_PWR_3V3_SCL and I2C_SMC_PWR_3V...

Vostro 3400 (LA-K033P) won't charge battery, everything else ok
              by techfreak9356
I bought a Vostro 3400 motherboard (LA-K033P) to upgrade over my damaged Inspiron 5593 (LA-J091P) board. Everything else is ok except for the battery. This battery I am using now is already a replacement one since I disposed of the bloated original one. Back in the Inspiron 5593 motherboard, the battery charges fine and is identified just fine. However, with the upgraded motherboard, suddenly the replacement battery is labeled as "Not a dell battery". When I borrow a similar battery from my colleague (which did not have replacements yet), it is identified and charges just fine.

The ISL88739 & ISL88739AHRZ are a highly versatile combo battery charger
configurable for operating as either a Hybrid Power Boost (HPB)
charger or a Narrow VDC (NVDC) charger, supporting 2-, 3-, or
4-cell batteries. Both configurations allow the battery to work with
the adapter together to supply the system load when it exceeds
the adapter capability, referred to as system Turbo mode. HPB
charger configuration reverse-boosts battery energy to the system
bus to help the adapter provide the system power in Turbo mode.
