    Dell 5010 overheating issue

Hi I have a Dell M5010 just trying to diagnose a problem with overheating.

When I say overheating I mean it gets roasting hot on the underside of the GPU also the underside of the CPU.

I was wondering if this issue was GPU related however laptop switches on and can be on for around 3 minutes before shutting down.

Display is working on boot up no artefacts and cleaned fan which is working and applied new thermal compound this makes no difference.

RAM, CPU are 100% working in another machine so that ruled them out, was wondering if the Tantalum caps could be causing this issue.

As I said it gets roasting hot in those particular areas, and have turned to the experts on here to point me in the right direction.

    Motherboard details :- 09909-1 dg15 mb 48.4hh01.011

Many thanks and please be gentle with me

Measure voltages, you may have a malfunctioning CPU core regulator.

But first things first, replace that stupid gray thermal rubber (which has dried out by now) that is over the GPU, with a 0.5mm or 1mm copper shim with good quality thermal paste on both sides. I bet $5 it will work just fine after you do that. All of the machines i ended up reballing the ATI chip, the failure was caused by that rubber and the weak retention system for the GPU heatsink (only 1 screw). One in 5 gets away with just replacing that and the chip is fine.

      Re: Dell 5010 overheating issue

Hi many thanks for the very informative reply, the actual CPU and GPU have in fact had the old crap stock thermal waste of space paste removed.

And I had already used an old copper heat sink which I broke down to use the fins as shims for various other laptops I have around the house.

I thought that it could be a chip or numerous at fault given that the board around both CPU and GPU are extremely hot.

One thing may I ask is how to go about checking for the correct voltages, whilst I am somewhat ok at fixing most things delving into board level testing is something I have struggled with.

Is it possible that the GPU could need a reflow/reball

      thanks again

No need to reball the GPU. Use the good thermal paste and the thermal pad between the heatsink and the gpu.

Thanks for your post, however even when the CPU/GPU has had fresh thermal compound applied it will still stay on at max 5 minutes before shutting down because of a thermal issue. I am thinking the CPU may be the issue here?

Or it's a case of testing the N channel FET's as all around the area of the CPU/GPU is roasting.

Have you measured the temperatures yet? In idle and full load? Use some SW and write output here.

After you fix heatsink on the gpu, you just press on it. it will show that is fixed perfect or not. if it going down you should add any copper sims between gpu and heatsink. First complete clean on the gpu for old thermal paste. thereafter apply new thermal paste and pad.

                Hi

The Lappy has no hdd, it's just bare essentials for it to power on to bios screen.

With regards to pressing on the GPU heat sink it makes no difference at all with any amount of pressure (also it becomes very hot).

Underside of both CPU and GPU become red hot and laptop will boot to bios with no articfacts on display, then after being on for around 5 mins it will shut off.

It will switch on again but shortly after switches off.

                Thanks for all your posts

                  Re: Dell 5010 overheating issue

I would venture to say your heat pipe has lost its ability to transfer the heat. They do have a liquid/gas inside them to move the heat from the cpu/gpu to the fins to be expelled with the fan.

Once this liquid/gas escapes/leaks out ... it no longer transfers heat from the hot spot to the cooler spot (the fins). Replace that heat pipe, fresh thermal paste and a copper shim for the video, should be set.

                  Here is a good explanation - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_pipe

Its not a heatsink problem or pad error. Check your capacitors under the GPU and CPU chips. You may have voltage leakage through them.
Replace all 330 and 470mf capacitors and check again.

Your ati gpu is about to die-dont waste your time changing caps-it will lead you nowhere to solution. This mobo is known to have ati gpu defect. Better replace the ati chip or convert it to uma.

just a suggestion i agree with mcplslg123 i have this kind of issue with dell when it overheats. when you heat it or reflow it repair will last exactly 1month and then it will return again to the original state. better yet replace the bga ati gpu to fix it.

                              Issue Description:
                              1. CPU Overheating to 100°C
                                • When I start the laptop from a cold state, it takes about a minute to reach temps around 80-90-100°C, and CPU thermal throttling triggers.
                                • When the CPU fan is running at full speed (by disconnecting PWM and TACH cables), CPU temperature stays around 50-60°C.
                                • However, when the fan is connected normally to the motherboard, it does not kick in at high temperatures.
                                • I also noticed a few times that the fan kicked in for a very short time, but it does not stay on consistently.

This one's a weird one, and still unsolved despite it having gone back to Dell once.

                              Specs

i7-8750H, GTX 1060 Max Q, 500GB SSD & Seagate 7mm 1TB HDD. 17.3 IPS screen. This has the fingerprint reader in the power button.

                              Backstory

I bought this from eBay, from a wallpapering shop. £650 in 2020 which was a good price considering it's a gaming laptop. Physically it's in perfect shape, apart from the hinge mounts on the palmrest failing in the time I've had it (I have a new palmrest for it). The usual thin plastic crap modern build quality!...

My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.

The Dell Inspiron 3480 I own (the all in one, not the laptop) is not wanting to turn on at all. It goes right to a dell logo, but it stays there forever with no other information on the screen. Holding the automatic Bios repair key combo (ctrl+esc) that should let it read a recovery file off a USB drive gets stuck on a black screen and does nothing. No amount of resetting anything so far has worked, and Dell's own support downloads have not really helped. Ive tried another BIN file I found online using my CH341A, and this got me slightly more, that time it displayed a loading bar that never moved...
