We downloaded BIG SUR and upgraded into Big Sur. Tried the same thing for Monterey and Ventura to no avail. Those installs were then copied to external USB and tried on another 16” to successful installs. And you can install external as long as you change the security settings.

When you keep saying the updates/installs (beyond Catalina) "fail", do they all fail the same way--i.e. hanging during final stages of install (black screen, Apple logo, progress bar, XX minutes remaining, etc)? What happens if you try to install Monterey/Ventura on a connected USB drive (after disabling T2 boot security settings on board via IR)?

Do you see any indications of this board being a previously-refurbished (Apple or otherwise) board? Look for any markings or small stickers. If this IS a previously-refurbished board from Apple, then you will need to consider damage caused by their terrible rework techs. They overheat things, don't protect critical components, don't properly repair "ALL" liquid-damage, and other things.

You've got to dig deeper on this one; you need to start with memtest. Then you will need to get your hands dirty and begin 'poking' some of these subcircuits and components. There's a failure here, but it's not an obvious or high-level one.

It upgraded to Big Sur without issue. It doesn’t hang it just gives errors like the previous posts stated trying to go to Monterey or higher. So ruling it out as nothing crazy yet, it works perfectly fine and 100% without any crashes on Big Sur or below. YouTube, stews testing is good but going to do a memtest Monday. Just repaired a few logic boards on our bench, not to worried on fixing this one just wanted to see if it was something simple before fixing our board.
