Macbook air 2015 (00165A motherboard) power issue

My Macbook air 2015 (00165A motherboard) has a strange fault.

When I plug in the charger the laptop immediately switches off.

The battery still charges when off and I can reboot the laptop with the charger connected and all appears fine until I disconnect then reconnect the charger and the problem appears.

Tried resetting PRAM/SMC and even changed the I/O board but problem appears to be on the motherboard so looking for ideas to fault find.

    Re: Macbook air power issue

Are you using the official magsafe power adapter?

    Remove the battery.

Attach the power adapter. Measure the voltage to ground of each pin of the dual common cathode diode at D7005.

Confirm that you have a stable 3v42 rail that is fed by this dual diode component. This diode will steer the higher of the 2 voltage rails, the magsafe power adapter or the battery to power the logic board.

Confirm the ppbus_g3h voltage to ground.

    Post each measurement.

I am not using an original magsafe but it works on my other macbooks fine.

      Pin 1 is at 8.6V
      Pin 2 19.7V
      Pin 3 19.5 V

With the mains connected and the battery disconnected the voltage across is 20.4V

I'd be pulling out the board and looking closely at the ISL (U7100) section. If your PPBUS_G3H is 8.4V without battery (should be 8.6V), then this points to the ISL area. Screwy PPBUS_G3H voltages are usually corrosion around pin 1~7 of U7100 and the attached resistors therein.

I re-balled the SMC and now all seems good.

I used 0.3mm solder balls to re-ball and it produced very neat results...much better than any stencils that I have used. It takes a while to place the 157 balls but was well worth it.

The laptop is still running a bit hot so suspect there is still a short somewhere...may invest in a IR camera to investigate further....any recommendations?

MacBook Air A2337 (820-02016) USB-C Port Issue – Only Works in One Orientation (CC Line Problem?)
                    by rounin
                    Hi everyone,

I'm working on a MacBook Air 2020 (A2337, board 820-02016) and running into a strange USB-C issue. I've gone through quite a bit of testing and part replacement, but I'm stuck — hoping someone here can shed some light.

                    🛠 Original Issue
                    The machine initially wouldn't negotiate 20V over USB-C — stuck at 5V.
Diagnosis showed PP1V5_UPC0_LDO_CORE shorted to ground.

I replaced U3100 (UF400) using a donor board (A2179), and the machine powers on fine now.

⚠️ New Problem: One USB-C Port Only Works in One Orientation...

Strange issue with Macbook Pro 15" mid 2015
                    by roxboy1984
Please could someone assist. Im having a very strange issue. So i have a Macbook pro that was having screen issues where the screen would glitch and show artifacts etc so i initially thought the screen needed to be replaced so i got a replacement and installed the new screen which was just completely black. i can get a display on an external monitor but i get no display on original glitchy screen anymore and ive tried multiple working screens and they are all blank and ive tried the orignaly glitchy screen on a different macbook and that is also now black. But again it works perfectly on an external...

Legion Y540 17irh motherboard issue ( need help to know how to diagnose my motherboard)
                    by Docus
                    Hi everyone 😀,

I'm here today to ask for help with repairing the motherboard of a Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH.

To give you some context, I'm passionate about computer repair so much so that I've invested in a lot of tools and started practicing on dead and old hardware. I've been learning how to solder and desolder components, mostly focusing on phone repairs.

Recently, I bought a broken Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH for just €150, and there are two main reasons why I made this purchase:
                    1. I already own the exact same model, but its plastic chassis is badly damaged.

ASUS Zephyrus GA401I Severe Lag, Suspect Motherboard/Power Issue - Need Help Diagnosing
                    by MakNCheese
                    Hi everyone,

I'm having a serious issue with my ASUS Zephyrus GA401I (4 years old, worked perfectly until recently). The system is lagging heavily, even in the BIOS, and is charging extremely slowly (a few percent in hours), making it nearly unusable. I suspect a motherboard or power delivery issue.

                    Symptoms:
                    • Severe lag across the system, including BIOS navigation.
                    • Slow boot times and unresponsive performance in Windows.
                    • Battery charges very slowly (e.g., ~5% in 2–3 hours).
                    • No error messages or BSODs, just extreme sluggishness.

                    What I've Tried:
                    • Replaced
                    ...

Macbook Pro mid 2015 battery required to boot?
                    by twonk9098
I have read many forums that state the Macbook Pro 2015 needs / does not need a battery to boot. I'm not convinced as yet which is correct.
The Macbook Pro mid 2015 I have has no battery and do not really want to buy one just to test.
This model has the newer trackpad which is not clickable when turned off.
At the moment, without battery it does turn on with no display (with backlight), no chime and then turns off after 13 seconds. I see this from the power draw on my DTPS.
If I hold the power button whilst connecting the magsafe 2 charger it turns on, again no image but...
