    PS3 dead laser or motor?

Got another console to fix for myself. PS3 40GB fat came in not reading discs... decided to swap drives with a working spare. Found out later that's not an option, because they're locked to each other. I'm new to console repairs. So took apart dead drive, put the disc in, and it doesn't spin - at all. DVD, nothing, bluray, nothing.

Now to me this looks like a dead spindle motor, but could it be the laser failing some self-test?

    Any way to test?

Re: PS3 dead laser or motor?

funny you mention this, I actually ran into an unsuccessful fix of a PS3 a few weeks ago, at first it tried to read, eventually not. Probably something I ended up fucking up

anywhooo. Heres what you do. Take the top plastic part off. Leaving nothing but the bare spindle, laser, and loaders. Put a disk in, once it moves it toward to spindle (with the top part off, it should actually end up a little further beyond the spindle) pick it up quickly. See of the BD laser blinks. If the laser blinks, probably bad spindle motor

also, maybe before hand, with the top plastic part off, move the laser assembly further down, it should move forward when you start putting a disk in, or when the PS3 is booting up, this way you know if the stepping motor is bad or not

controller boards CAN be switched out, but it requires having the exact model controller board and unballing the NAND chip from one board and putting it on another.

this could ALSO be the ribbon cable from the laser assembly to the controller board. Make sure those connections are tight. If need be take your MM and check each contact (yes this is a PAIN IN THE ASS)

they do sell new spindle/bd laser assemblys on ebay for $~32

I guess it could also maybe be a bad driver IC for the motor. Or the disk drive control IC is toasted.

You said you had a working spare? Try connecting the control board from the broken drive to the spare mechanism.

as much as I appreciate your enthusiasm...and wish it worked that way. It does not. In my expirence with my attempted repair, the thing will not even TRY to roll a disk in unless its connected to the PS3 and the PS3 is on. Not sure if this will work with a rejected NAND chip or not.

you could always switch out JUST the controller board from his 'bad' one with the replacement

There IS a way to swap drives between PS3's. You need to run a bit of code that uses the exploit and forces the remarriage of a different drive to a PS3.

I had copies of the dongle images and instructions someplace but I can't find them now. I'm sure though it's on Google someplace.

The disc spindle motor will not spin on this unit. The motor has 2.5v on both sides and does not change.

I have a second unit that works 100% that needed a recap. I tried the PSU before and after the recap. No change. I swapped the video board that has all of the ICs on it and it still wont spin. I injected 2.5v into CN2 (the motor connector) and the motor spun.

The pickup assembly moves back and forth. The laser appears to light up, although it doesn't look like any newer laser diode with a well defined dot in the center. I can see red light refracting off the lens...

Maytag Whirlpool Kenmore clothes dryer data bus
                by Joe24
Patient is a Maytag/Whirlpool/Kenmore clothes dryer. Not sure of exact model, doesn't matter. All boards are out of production.

Specific problem is a Maytag 8544799 / WP8544799 motor-control board, aka Diehl Controls 708879-05. Customer states the board "doesn't work, motor doesn't run". Not sure how the repairman made that assessment, or if it's even accurate. He can't get replacement boards, and the owner decided to buy a new dryer, so whether this board is the problem is speculation on his part. Again, doesn't matter.

I've been over the board looking for...

Onkyo DX-V500 Laser Disc Player - weird SMPS fault
                by dkneyle
This relic from a technology path that came to a dead end (but still has historical interest) was brought in with a dead SMPS, which is based around a MK1210 device. I got it going after a battle. It seems to have a strange design - if it's not getting feedback that the secondary is OK it cause the big FET to go into full conduction and overloads resulting in a blown fuse at best or something worse! I'm using a Dim Bulb Tester (70W/230V) which thankfully has saved the day a number of times whilst repairing.

Now, it loads a CD OK. The motor voltage output (which is built onto the SMPS...

Nescafe Aeroccino, still fails with new Motor (red flashes only once)
                by juergenb
                Hi,

i am asking for some Help.
I have one of these Nescafe Aeroccino (Milk Frother) things with a bad motor.
The Motor didn“t start anymore and internet is full of users just swapping the motor for a Mabuchi RF-500TB-12560.
So i got a few of these from Banggood.

I swapped the motor and now i have a new fault condition.

In a working Frother you would press the start button, it will light red and work for a few minutes.
If you press longer it will light blue and just mixup the milk.

With the new Motor it just starts...

Dead hand drier autopsy - motor discussion
                by Dannyx
Good day folks. A few days ago I had the misfortune to be assigned a hand drier, the vertical type with a slot at the top where you insert your hands and a jet of air on either side blasts away the water. This thing was a nightmare to work on and it's stuff like this that makes me hate my job: very dirty, disgusting ! They didn't even have the courtesy to let it dry before plopping it on my desk....dirty water dripping out of it, mixed with bits of dust, hairs and dirt, limescale everywhere, a pungent moisture smell....horrible experience ! The type of thing you would only give to a greenhorn...
