I'm going to replace a bunch of Elite caps 3300uf/6.3v in an ECS K7AMA2 mobo and the owner is in a rush. These caps are all located beside the power MOSFETs and their inductors. All I have right now are Samxons 3300uf/16v and 2700uf/6.3v. I'm inclined to use the 3300uf's but the voltage rating is quite afar from the 5v that normally runs through the circuit. On the other hand, the 2700's are of the correct voltage but are 20% lower in capacity compared to the originals. Which should I use? Thanks, guys.
Which is the better choice to replace 3300/6.3v caps?

If they are the same physical size as the original, use the 3300uF although you will be 'wasting" the higher voltage rating.
OTOH, if there are empty spots to add an extra cap, you could add extra 2700uF to make up the total capacitance of the 3300s. Make sure you use a meter to check the empty spot. -

ESR is more important than uF in the VRM.
Use the one with the lowest ESR.Mann-Made Global Warming.

Re: Which is the better choice to replace 3300/6.3v caps?
I went with the 2700/6.3 (GF series) caps. Samxon website tells me these are low impedance types (0.042 ohm) but the 3300/16v (GS series) that I have are general purpose types whose impedance is not even listed. BTW, what does max ripple current refer to? The RC of the 2700/6.3 is 1650, while the RC of the 3300/16 is 1990.Comment

Re: Which is the better choice to replace 3300/6.3v caps?
Passing Ripple Current causes heat inside the capacitor.
The Ripple Current rating is how much Ripple Current the cap can handle without over-heating.
You can think of it like a Watt rating on a resistor or the current rating on wire.

Re: Which is the better choice to replace 3300/6.3v caps?
0.042Ω = 42 mΩ
Some Low ESR cap could have as low as a few mΩ only.
Nevertheless, you can still use the 2700 one without problem.
Besides, its always good to have your case with good ventilation .******************************************Comment

by momakaI know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.
For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

by cloppy007I've found out that the all the Nichicon HM(M) caps on this board are faulty and need replacement. However, I didn't plan in advance and I don't have good replacement caps.
The original values are 2200uF, 6.3V, 5mm pitch. According to the datasheet, the rated impedance should be around 13-18 uOhms.
There are 8 of them, 3 to the left of the CPU socket and 5 on the bottom, very close to the northbridge. They are all connected, according to my multimeter.
I think I recall hearing that I don't have to use the same capacitance for in series...08-21-2023, 03:18 PM -
by Paxman_SwedeHello!
I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.
The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.
I have studied the board and...-

by edithHello everyone I have a question. I have a laptop and his schematic. Can anyone tell me how to measure or any way to understand specific of caps so i can buy new one?
Also in case how can I understand if some caps of some dead Mobo i have, are ok to be replaced in my new motherboard which im trying to fix?
Thank you!-
