Hello guys. The 3 yr old office UPS blew one night and I was asked to look into it. It is a Singapore made Giant unit Model 1200 VA. There are 2 banks of FB50N06 power MOSFETS (push-pull circuit?). Each bank has 3 MOSFETS. One bank had 2 of the 3 MOSFETS blistered and burned. The middle one even had its Source pin melted. The two 12 volt batteries were dead.
Nothing else looked cooked and the main AC fuse was intact. I would want to ask what parts to suspect and replace before I change out the burned semiconductors. Thanks in advance.

What to look for that blew UPS MOSFETs?

Re: Help making pre-amp kit work with turntable
Be aware that there are two types of magnetic cartridges: moving magnet (the more common, less costly type) and moving coil (more costly, less commonly used on stock ttables). Each needs a preamp tailored for the cartridge type. Yours seems to be the moving magnet type.Last edited by berniedd; 01-23-2016, 03:25 AM.

Re: "Dead" iMac Intel EMC2389: Bad PSU or Logicboard?
Here's an update: I measured the voltages at the PSU output to the logicboard. With the iMac on standby (just plugged in to AC), pin 4 has 12.12 V (with respect to ground) and pin 6 has 4.0 v. After I press the power button (and diagnostic LED #1 goes dead), pin 4 still has 12.12 V and pin 6 now has 3.6 V. All other pins (12 in number) read 0 or near 0 V whether at standby or after I've pressed the power button. Sounds like PSU problem?

"Dead" iMac Intel EMC2389: Bad PSU or Logicboard?
I was called on to diagnose this dead iMac (21.5 inch, EMC 2389). Owner said she was typing something in Excel, and the whole thing just died. She had the hard drive removed so she could get her data off it. She brings it to me and I remove the LCD.
I free up the power supply and all components look OK. I plug it in and LED #1 lights up. I press the switch and there is no response, and LED #1 goes dead. Other LEDS remain dead. So, what do you guys think? PSU or logicboard? The PSU has part # 614-0445. Other side of the board says it's an ADP-200DFB. The DC out connector has 14 pins,...

Re: I just accidentaly destroyed my Fortron Blue Storm II
Just for the record, the PSU housing is not only for protection against accidental touching of live wires but also to direct the airflow properly so it goes over the heat sinks and other hot components. Removing the sheet metal changes the airflow pattern and can overheat things.

Any known issues with 32LG5300 LED TV?
I've been asked to repair an LED televion 32LG5300 model. Set is fine till it warms up after 20 or so minutes, then the backlight turns off. The main board was replaced twice already for this same problem before, once within warranty and the last one months later at the owner's expense. Is there a design problem or known issue with this model line?

Re: 2200uf 10v cap replace with 6.3v?
I use 6.3 volt quality caps to replace 10 volt-rated ones on 5 volt rails, and I've never had a failure yet even after 4 years of the repair....

Re: Refrigerator induction motor: peak current draw
Maybe you need more than a 1KW generator. I remember in the early 2000s when we had a power blackout for 4 days. On day 3, I desperately needed the ref (220 watts) to cool the food I'd stashed in there. So I connected it to my 1500-watt single phase generator (no other appliances connected, just the ref). After 15 minutes, I turned 'em both off. When power was restored later, the ref wouldn't start. The compressor was found to be shorted, and I had to get it replaced.

Re: Schematic needed for XYS-300V-12 power supply
Thanks, budm. I haven't gone through the entire board yet, but the power schottky diodes are fine. Of the power transistors Q1 and Q2 (both D13009 NPN transistors) at the right edge of the board, both are shorted. Q2's base resistor R7 is open.
The links are helpful, but the calculations will have to wait till I can take stock of the inductances and evaluate the other board components. Thanks for the info and links. I'm sure many readers will benefit from reading them.

Re: Schematic needed for XYS-300V-12 power supply
Ok, here it is. For reference, I just flipped the board upside down away from me from the original position as seen above.
The burned parts are C26, C27, R44, R45. A cursory multitester sweep of the boars parts shows that R7 is open, Q2 (NPN power transistor) D13009K is shorted. The main 8ampere AC fuse is open/burned out....Last edited by berniedd; 07-25-2014, 02:55 AM.

Schematic needed for XYS-300V-12 power supply
It's a chinese made generic power supply for a CCTV system. The thing has some burned out components whose markings are no longer readable. S-400-R13 is a label on the chassis housing. On the board itself, I see the characters S-400-R13 and D201103. A new psu has been fitted to the CCTV system, but I'd like to bring this one back to life. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Weight of a battery
Nope, mass didn't change. What did change was the acid became more concentrated as the charging current drove off the sulfate from the lead grids to change back to the original sulfuric acid in the electrolyte. In the process, the lead sulfate also changed back to lead. When you discharge the battery the sulfuric acid combines with the lead to form lead sulfate and hydrogen gas.

No screws visible, how to crack open Acer LCD unit?
5 year old Acer AL1027 LCD monitor is dead. Looks like a bad power supply. How do I get to open the case? There are no visible screws to remove. I'm afraid if I start prying, I might break something.

Mobo hangs, what else to look at?
Help me out, guys. Desktop computer with ECS mobo model GF7050VT-M5 with 3 GHz Pentium procie was brought to me. No signs of life. All parts on the mobo look good, and there are no bloated capacitors there. But I see a bloated capacitor in the power supply, so I change it with a fresh PSU. I changed the CMOS battery, and also reset the CMOS, and now the thing boots. I hear the short "OK" beep from the internal speaker. However, the process hangs after it shows the USB Controllers have been initialized and that RAM is good. I don't get the message "Failed to load the Operating System,...
