    Recapped VP6 posted once... :(

Recapped my VP6 with the recap kit, didn't have any problems removing the old caps, I used solder wick (with a little flux wiped onto it) and it worked nicely. Used lacquer thinner to clean up the flux before installing new caps, cleaned up all the solder joints afterward, they all looked good, no cold solder joints, didn't get the board too hot either removing or reinstalling the new caps.

Upon first boot, it posted fine, counted all the ram, saw both CPUs, etc, but I rebooted it before it tried to load Windows and reset the cpu speed to 100x7 for a pair of PIII700s, and warm booted it. Now it won't post, no beep, cleared CMOS, same thing. Can't understand if it posted once, wonder what happened to it that it won't post again? Only thing I changed was setting the CPU speed to 100x7 and set primary display to AGP. Clearing CMOS would have reset that to PCI, and also defaulted the CPU speed to 466mhz.

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

FYI, I have had quite a bit of experience in electonics repair, and also worked building motherboards and all kinds of cards for IBM AS400 and RS6000 servers, worked on the wave solder lines, SMT lines, manual build, etc so I feel that I at least have a somewhat respectable clue as to how to do this kind of work.

    Thanks for reading...

        Working fine now

Oddly enough, it started going through post after letting it sit a few hours, but hung repeatedly with a flashing cursor where it would normally say "verifying DMI pool" and the last thing in the PCI register it saw, was the ACPI controller. I looked at the IRQ assignments, realized that there was no network controller. I thought hmm.... Took the NIC out of it, it went on through post and went to the desktop like there never was a problem.

I flashed the bios with the yt_234 file, reinstalled the same NIC in the same PCI slot, and it has been working fine since doing this. Go figure!

It doesn't freeze in windows like it did before, and I really didn't think I did anything wrong in soldering, I was very careful and cleaned it up really good, the solder joints look too good for that to have caused a problem. I thought well maybe there was something other than just the caps wrong with it, but it seems like it is fixed now, and running fine.

Before I recapped it, there was only a fresh install of XP pro on a clean format, and I couldn't even open control panel and click on "switch to classic view" without it locking up. I mean every single time I tried that, it would lock up. Naturally, that's the first thing I did after recapping, and so far no lockups or any other problems whatsoever that I can tell.

Now I can load some other apps and load Sandra as well, see how it does with the burn-in wizard, then see how it does with slight overclocking, etc.

        Glad I found you guys

CMOS battery holder solder pad trace
          by Kemer
          Hi,
I will add a photo of HP 15 laptop mainboard. The positive side of CMOS battery holder solder pad has been broken. What I want to ask is, the trace of positive pole. If you look at the photo, you will notice red color "A" and "B" letters for two different shades of blue.

          Anybody help?...

Best way to solder LVDS connector for beginner (and qfn) ?
          by corrize
Hello, I'm a beginner for micro soldering. Right now I have some difficult to solder a qfn 20, I guess I put too much solder on the thermal-ground pad, the result is a corner of chip wich don't touch the board (last try).

I use a wire solder with hot air, I tin the board and chip before with iron and I use good flux.

I will have to solder a LVDS connector (40 pins, laptop pc), I saw a solder paste in seringe, good quality (it does not scatter).
          See the test :

With hot air from bellow the board, that's...

UV solder mask - high temp resistent, recomendation?
          by myth77
Can someone recommend any good UV solder mask? But i need a solder mask that will stand high temperetures. The thing is...sometimes i have a bigger cooper ripped from the board, lets say mosfet pad... i reconstract it with cooper sheet, then i "glue it" with solder mask...then i use UV light...and let it cool a bit. After, i try to clean the cooper of extra solder mask..and till that part all is ok. But, when i use a soldering iron to solder that pad/cooper...the solder mask gets weaker or destroyed and finally the pad is ripped again from the board .
          Is there any solder mask...

BGA solder balls not connecting - help pls
          by petemanuk
So I though in my spare time I’d set myself up repairing motherboards mainly pin damaged lga1151 sockets types.

I’m using an achi ir sc pro rework station (gave up on my Achie ir6500 - don’t recommend)

I’ve managed to get my rework profile somewhere in the correct region (after a lot of trial and error) to get the old sockets off and reflow new ones back on again, the problems I’m getting is not all of the solder balls are re-attaching when re-flow occurs. I know this because when socket is removed pads still look clean and have no solder...
