Asus P4P800 SE Recap no boot

Ok I have 5 of these boards. Yes I know they are old but they run fine. We run lot of older programs & have a lot of custom setups that are all ghosted so the thought of redoing all that on new system make me want to cry So keeping these boards alive is best option.
I have some knowledge about electronics & soldiering but you guys loss me with the VRM & ESR talk so go easy on me

    This board has 7 1500uf 6.3v 8mm 20mm
    And 17 820uF 6.3v 8mm 12mm
The rest are those little one & from what I read will not cause a no boot all of the little ones are L-tec brand on every board

Board 1 would not boot I could see 2 caps around the AGP slot were bad I ordered some caps here I only replaced the 2 820uf that were bad & bam it worked.
Cool extra board for back up
Well 2 weeks later one of my boards stops booting but no caps look bad
I swap with my fixed one runs great for 2 months then poops Looks like 2 more 820uz went out I put those 2 in & no go So I cap the whole board but still no boot.
The 3 boards I do have running all have bad caps the 6 1500uf right next to the CPU
Q1 What more can I do with the board that wont boot with all new caps. Yes I have a good PS & yes I know my CPU & RAM are good tested all in my running systems

Q2 the 1500uf 6.3v 8mm 20mm only come in 10v on here. Can I use 10v ones I had to buy some 6.3v at a local store for this one board.

Q3 other dead board with no signs of bad caps symptoms were freezing under loads. I shut down to swap ram for test & she never came back.Caps on it are all OST Recap it all ?

I also have a p4p800 Deluxe board runs fine but one of the KZE 1500uf 6.3v 8mm 20mm next to the CPU is just starting to bulge I read on here KZE are good but I guess not perfect.
So glad I found this site.

In regards to q2 that would be fine. Best practices (from what ive heard) is to use a capacitor that has double the voltage rating of the voltage expected to go through it...

Long story short... they would be fine

Thanks Luke now if BC only had them in stock

You can order from somewhere like mouser or digikey. You will just have to check the replacement parts are electrically similar to the originals... ill see if i can link you to some similar ones if i can or you can email TC if he has his email somewhere about the availability of the cap.

With Q1 have you checked you did not rip up any traces or bridge any solder points? Do a close inspection under bright light and see if you can see any places where you have bridged the solder pads particularly on the capacitors. That would easily prevent it booting. Rereading thr question it could be a blown power component or even a blown fuse... have a good look and see if you see anything obvious though first.

          http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...PM6-ND/2428107

          Digikey seems to have them

As for Q3, try a recap. OST often fail with no visible signs of it.

It would be a KZG. There's no such thing as a 1500uF 6.3V 8x20mm KZE

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Thanks for the response guys. Yes it could be KZG as I have that board installed & it hard to read when in the case.
I have done a close inspection of the board bright light & a pair of my daughters old glasses mega magnified LOL I am not sure how to spot traces or bridge any photo examples ?

Re: Asus P4P800 SE Recap no boot

Well I recapped the board with the OST caps on it today. I saw no signs of blown caps on that board. Still no boot just got fans & lights Wasted lot of time & money thus far.
So far I have replaced 2 bad caps that you could clearly see were bad on one board & it came back to life for a few months It died & I replace all the caps no boot

Replaced 2 caps on another its running now but having random reboots so I need too do all the caps on that one & pray it works

Thus far I am 1 for 3 & that one is half ass at best.
I have 2 more boards that have caps next to the CPU buldging I am afraid to mess with those boards as now my back up boards are toast.

One nice thing is a friend loaned me his HAK808 so desoldering is little easier.

Re: Asus P4P800 SE Recap no boot

USB port short-circuit can damage the south bridge chip, such damage leads to permanent failure to boot.

                    This worries me a little.
Where do you buy your capacitors from, and what brands are available there? Just because two capacitors are 10V and 1500 uF doesn't necessarily mean that they are equivalent. This is where that ESR and ripple current stuff comes in. Basically, first you have to look at the original capacitors on the board and then find their data sheet online (or ask here). Then we can tell you which are suitable replacements (or better yet, HOW to pick suitable replacements).

Let's take the board that has KZG caps on it. Say you have a 16V, 1200 KZG capacitors on there. The first step you do is find the data sheet for that capacitor on Google. KZG and KZJ are actually made by United Chemicon. So you search, "United Chemicon KZG". Particularly, look for PDF files only. Next, open the data sheet and find your 16V 1200 uF capacitor in there. Note the ESR and ripple current rating. These two parameters are just as important as the capacitance and the voltage. Next, pick a replacement capacitor that has the same voltage and capacitance ratings, same or lower ESR rating, and same or higher ripple current rating. If you want a good quality repair job, you should stick with the "good Japanese brands". Those would be Panasonic, Nichicon, Rubycon, and United Chemicon (but avoid their KZG and KZJ series).

The following series from the above Japanese capacitors are considered suitable for motherboards:
Nichicon: HZ, HN, HM, HD, HE
Rubycon: MZC, MBZ, ZLH, ZLJ, ZL, YXG
Panasonic: FL, FJ, FJS, FM, FR, FK
                    United Chemicon: KZE

There are probably some others that I missed. But I think you get the idea.

Hum well I just went all Nichicon with the same value & voltage I never knew I need to look up the ESR rating.

What series did you use? It should be HM or HN series on a motherboard. HD and HE are OK for some of the smaller caps, but not for a VRM

                          HM on the 820uF 6.3v 8mm 12mm
                          And HZ for the 1500uf 6.3v 8mm 20mm
But on 2 of the boards I ran out of the HZ & I put PA (m)
The PA ones were in a working board I removed today as it was having reboot issue when playing video I had only replaced the 7 1500uf on that board & I have found one had a bad solider joint I sill am a rookie at this. If the PA is no good then I will swap but all I have right now are the HZ
