    Siemens D1184 - weird burn

    Don't know what happened to this board - the -12V supply to the RS-232 driver chip was destroyed, together with some signal trace. Also one leg of 5V filter cap was burnt, the cap was then completely open.
    Fixed the signal trace and -12V trace, replaced the cap and connected the negative leg to nearest ground (as the hole was completely burnt). But it didn't work. Then found a completely unrelated scratch on the back which breaked another signal trace - fixed that and the board works fine! The serial port works, onboard LAN works too.
    WTF?

      Looks like the cap itself shorted out and caused the traces running to it to act as fuses That doesn't happen too often, normally caps just go open don't they?

          Or the chassi behind managed to touch the cap leads...

              May be some not galvanically isolated device was pluged in and caused some ground bouncing currents to follow. There is no coincidence that there are many RS232 opto isolators out there.

                  I have a HANNSG Hi221 monitor that exhibits two seconds to black issues (backlight goes off, display is still on as confirmed by shining a flashlight on it) with some additional oddities...


                  The monitor failed on me with a standard "2 seconds to black" some time ago prompting me to initially replace most of the electrolytic capacitors (some of them were bulging/leaking).
                  Things kinda sorta worked for a night, then the problem returned along with some flickering and "buzzing" noises.

                  Upon closer inspection...

                  I have here a Magnum IA.100 which belongs to my parents.



                  The unit powers on & when the relay kicks in, you get a pop from the speakers (this might sound weird but is usual behavior for this amp). However, you get nothing coming through it from any of the inputs & no pops and crackls from any of the controls.


                  Because of the sound from the speaker when the amp turns on I have assumed that the output section probably works but I could be wrong & I'm not sure how to test that side of things further.

                  I have an AOC U27G3X 4K gaming monitor that I use both as a TV and for gaming on a Nintendo Switch 2 console. Recently, something very strange has been happening to it. After playing a game that has an on-screen timer for a few minutes, the last digit of the timer (the one rapidly flickering from 0 to 9) appears to burn in on the monitor. Going to a different source or power cycling the monitor does not help; there is a constant flickering area on the screen where that digit was.

                  It seems strange that only that digit would burn in, and NOT the other digits that are changing less frequently....

                  Eventually discovered a burn mark near lower corner of LCD. Here is a summary
                  • Backlight on, no image
                  • Disconnect right buffer board (view from front), left side display comes on
                  • Masked off pin 7+8 (both ~12,5v on both left and right buffer board) from t-con to right buffer board (view from front) display works but have some lines
                  • Buffer board is pretty simple
                  Removed the front bezel to examine edge of the glass. Found burn mark on lower right (view from front). Plastic bezel covering the burn mark region shows heat signature on the inside surface facing the LCD panel. Last 2 pics. Bright...

                  Hi folks,

                  This HP Pavilion Aero 13-be1021AU came to me for a repair. And it seems to have a weird BIOS chip. (Pic attached)
                  I asked my CH341A to read it and doesn't even know what to do with this. We are both very confused.

                  BIOS - XMC 25RU128CH10 (1.8v)

                  What the heck is this? I looked all over the MB. This is the only bios.
                  When I asked the NeoProgrammer to detect it, it just pops up an empty screen, and asked me to enter the bios number. And when I did, it doesn't do anything. NeoProgrammer showed me just this SPI ID: 204418. Don't know what...
