Would a bad Ethernet Controller stop this board from posting?

I think I have one of these in the rubbish pile at work - blown caps, it's not worth repairing to me.

Will check Monday.

I think the missing component in that location is normal.

Oh right, I can't tell it looks like a shadow.

You're missing a hell of a lot of caps, that's probably one reason why it's not starting.
I can't see any CPU mosfets either... hmm.

Possible that the bad caps have caused a mosfet to short. Got a multimeter handy?

Would the heatsink thats in the photo above be an adequate replacement?

The LAN IC looks fine.
Not likely a bad one would prevent booting. Could, but not likely.

Will the Granada's transmission fit the mystery Ford?

Every time I see a motherboard with a heatsink like that, I always replace it with a bigger one. Those heatsinks provide very little cooling and are inadequate for just about all chipsets other than those which run so cool they don't need a heatsink at all.

Most modern chipsets are under 10 watts.

ERROR in my choice of reference.
Whoever filled in that wiki used idle watts.

That's not to say they have THAT much more TDP.
Chipsets are under 30 watts and CPU's in servers with TDP twice that often use fan-less heat-sinks.
Fancy coolers on chipsets are mostly marketing [at least for Intel chipsets. - AMD, VIA, and nVidia may be power hogs.]

Well I dunno PCBONEZ, I've got a Intel D945GCLF Mini-ITX mobo here
It's got one of those Atom CPU's so the CPU is like 2 watts

But they paired it with a 945GC chipset, according to the numbers you gave that should be ca 22w
The chipset heatsink is like 4 times bigger than that of the CPU, and it has an active fan
Which sounded like crap so I replaced it with a bigger copper heatsink and a very slow moving fan (I want this system dead silent, it is my firewall)
The chipset still runs above 80°C with a copper heatsink and aircooling...

Now you can argue the intelligence of Intels mainboard designers pairing a 2w CPU with a 22w Northbridge, but the fact still remains that that chip sure wont let itself be passively cooled (I tried, result was over 100°C and burnt finger when checking temps...)

Many Laptop CPU's are more than 22 watts.

seanc is that board in your photo a dead one? I wouldn't mind the bios chip if I can get some money to you for post to OZ?

It's only dead because 2 of the Nichion HM have blown - it does actually still POST and boot.

BIOS chip is soldered on - not easily removable.

I'd still expect yours to power on with a broken BIOS, just wouldn't expect it to do much.
