Has anyone else seen this and would this indicate the same problem except the capacitors have ruptured instead of bulging?
No need to worry. The "white stuff" is an adhesive used by the manufacturer to hold parts in place prior to the soldering process. You can use a razor blade or hobby knife to slice through it when you are in the process of removing the old caps.

On the second photo (processor board), there is a component that has me concerned. On the photo, it is at the bottom right hand side of the blue oval. It is marked HT RBS31. I tried searching for a data sheet on this object and couldnt find one. My gateway processor board is different than this one however it has this same part. I noticed that this part, for some reason, has something moving around inside of it. My logic suggests that this cannot be a good thing. Anyone else ever see or test this component before? It almost looks like a photo trasistor or some type of isolation component.
This device is what tells your computer which orientation the monitor is in. Vertical or horizontal since it is a wide screen. It sits on a swivel base that allows you to turn the monitor longways and it will change the screen automatically.

Never head of Hobbymods, but Radio Shack does not sell low ESR (ohms) capacitors which is what is required on a power board that uses a SMPS.

You might have to reduce the resolution of the pictures the camera is taking. I have a problem with one of my cameras I have to reduce the resolution from 10m down to about 8m for things up load to badcaps, I have had problems even when the photos were resized.

I've read and read and read and I still need help.

Problem: When I plug in the power cord I hear a buzzing noise from one of the components nearest where the plug is plugged in. I can't detect exactly which component it is. No effects to the picture quality and/or the power in general. I figured I'd take care of it before it gets worse.

I've bought a repair capicitor kit from Hobbymods.. should have just gone to Radio Shack.. too late :p

I've checked all my caps and they look normal, no buldging. So I have no clue where to even begin as I don't want to unsolder the caps since they are still in good shape. I rarely use this monitor and now that I WANT TO USE IT there's problems :p

Here is a pic of my board... any and all help is appreciated

Based on your advice, I checked the F1 fuse for continuity, and it appears to be blown. Q1-4 appear to be fine.

Anyone know where a replacment fuse can be found, or can I just wire up a regular fuse with wire leads to make it easier?
    DigiKey carries them.

Also, replace BOTH caps on the inverter board, since they are starting to leak. Use same series caps as above.

On the inverter board, check fuse, F1 (lower right), for continuity and mosfets, Q1-Q4, for shorts.

When powering on, the "chimes" do sound, however nothing appears on the screen - whether that is the Gateway logo or input from any source (component, DVI, VGA). Even with a flashlight on it, the LCD does not display an image.

I pulled the casing apart (pain in the butt) and found a few capacitors that appear to be bad - I am hoping you experts can help identify and confirm, by visual, that these are indeed bad and would be causing the problems I am experiencing. With my limited knowledge, atleast one on the power board and (2) on the inverter board are bad.

    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

We always ask for pictures of your boards so we can reference components and see possible problems on your board. So start with that.

See post #90 and post the pictures using manage attachments. Please do not post inline.

I have this same Monitor, just got dropped off at my shop... I just fix computers and don't do any soldering... I get a "zilp" kinda zap noise every like 1.5 seconds whenever I attach the power.

Looking at the power close image that is where the noise is coming from. it's in the general area of where the power cable is plugged into. (like just in from it... maybe the box I can't identify because this isn't my feild.)

Do you know what the heck I'm talking about and any clues on how to fix this?

Also the "capacitor" on the bottom left in the power close image, on my board is bulged at the top to the point where it looks as though there is a slightly larger than a pin, hole in the top.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Domed, no matter how convex, indicated a bad cap -> i.e, definitely needs to be replaced as Wrog suggests with low ESR caps like Panasonic FM or FC series.

Guess it wouldn't hurt to replace them all.

Could these be found at Fry's?
The only radial caps I see at Fry's are NTE brand, and I've never heard of them. Safer to go with Panasonic FC or FM from Digikey or Mouser. I would also recommend replacing all of them on the power supply except for the large one on its side. It looks like there are 11 not including the big one. If you want help picking out replacements, list the uF, volts, make/series, diameter and height of each cap you are replacing and someone will make recommendations (the easy way is to just stick with Panasonic FC/FM though).

The way to do this (on many digital cameras): push down halfway on the button to focus, then move the camera to frame the rest of the picture. This will allow you to focus on anything and include anything surrounding that may help. That being said, I still can't tell if they are bulging but it does look at least a little like they are. If the tops are not completely flat, then it's time to replace them.

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
    by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

    Hi Everyone

Lately I am experiencing the deja-vu incident on one of the led monitor like this.

The monitor will randomly blackout and display no signal and will recover again.

LG 23MP55HQ LED Monitor turns off after a few seconds or flickers.
    by Rick_1234
    Good evening, gentlemen.

I have a problem with my monitor. It turns off after a few seconds or flickers. Shining a flashlight on the screen doesn't show any image, so I guess it's not the "2 seconds to dark" I read in the forum.

To turn it back on, I have to press the power button twice. Then after a few seconds it turns off again or flickers. See video.

Wise Wing F199 19'' LCD monitor - recapped
    by momaka
Looking through my repair pictures and notes, it's been a long time since I posted anything in the LCD monitors section. So here goes that.

I'm dedicating this thread to one of the very first LCD monitors I repaired (if not the first one), which was more than 10 years ago now. The monitor is a Wise Wing, model F199. It's a 19” CFL-backlit LCD. I got it for free off of Craigslist in 2009 from a guy, who said he bought it for cheap from Wallmart and the monitor worked only for a little less than 2 years before quitting.

When I saw the Craigslist post, I wasn't...
