    LG Flatron W2442PA no power

    Hi All

Before I get into it, I have found these 3 threads that have been somewhat helpful, But I've got an additional question

I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to stuff like this. My dad is an electrician but currently out the country for another week.. (I could wait for him, But I'd rather learn myself sooner or later)

Basically in the middle of the night I could hear a high pitch sound coming from the monitor, so I pulled out the power cord directly from the monitor. Fast forward to this morning, I plugged the cord back in, and now it won't turn on at all.

I have taken it to bits, Tested the fuse with a multimeter which seems fine. I have noticed that 2 of the 1000uf 16v capacitors seem to be bulging at the top as circled in the attachments.

    My questions are -

How can I test these with the multimeter?
Are they even worth testing if they're bulging or should I just replace?
Should I replace just the bulging ones or all of them to be safe?

Luckily I have done some soldering in the past so that part shouldn't be a problem!

    Thanks for any help

1 You cant really test them with a multimeter
2 Not worth testing if bulged
3 Replace all of that size/series to start with

Use low ESR caps for that purpose not caps from maplins
Suggest cpc.com panasonic FR FM or FC in that order you need to be careful
on physical size some values in some series may not fit.
I cant see the ends of the bigger caps just check they look ok.
Also as there are only 2 other small ones and one is the start up cap I would replace them as well

Caps may not be the only problem. When you say it doesnt come on do you mean doesnt light up - is the power light on?

There is another fuse at the back right corner Black rectangular job.

      Thanks for the quick reply.

My next question was going to be do I need low ESR or not, So thanks for answering!

Bigger caps look to be ok.

Yes doesn't light up at all. Have tried with another power lead etc so I know that isn't the problem.

Other fuse seems ok too, Getting a reading from it.

If you are confident enough and careful enough you could test for a voltage at the main caps.
Meter on 600vdc just test across the legs ( May be over 300 VDC so very careful us a RCD if you have one )
Work on a non conductive surface.

Not actually sure how to set the meter at 600vdc so I guess I will leave that bit for now.

What I will do is replace the capacitors and go from there?

Replaced 3 of the 1000uf capacitors (only 2 were bulging)

                All working fine now

i would have replaced the other 3 large ones at the same time - saves having to do it in the future.

What was the new replacement capacitors' brand and series? Those original capacitors are Su'scon SG series, which are very low impedance capacitors. Replacement equivalents, depending on capacitance and voltage, should be at least Panasonic FR series, Panasonic FM series, Rubycon ZLH series or Nippon Chemicon KZE series...

Good choice there. As always, check the specifications of the original capacitors first. Actually the closest match is Nippon Chemicon KZE series for the same capacitance and voltage. The Panasonic FM series has better specifications...

                          - Su'scon SG, 1000uF 16VDC 105C, 10x20x5mm, 1820mA@100kHz, 0.023R@100kHz, 4000h

That's fine, as long as the solder adhere tightly to the leads and flow around the through hole area...

                            If I'm honest, I only matched the 1000uF 16VDC 105C, 10x20x5mm when ordering.

Will remember the rest for next time!

When I redid my dad's Viewsonic, Which BTW when I told him I'd fully repaired it he told me I could have it, I made sure that capacitor was extremely firm, I also used Silver Rosin core instead of normal rosin core solder. I prefer to use higher quality and ensure my connections are better than stock.
