    Clicking and Popping?

    Hello Everyone,

I have a Diamond View 1770e CRT monitor that i think is going to die very soon, im only guessing this, but i'm not a computer monitor expert.
It sometimes clicks or pops and loses power for a second or so during operation. Whats wrong with it and is it going to die soon?
I wonder if it is time to buy a new LCD display for my personal PC yet?. I only have LCD displays on the gaming PCs, not the work/business PCs.

Anyone got any ideas to this issue?

    Thanks.

    common failure in diamondtron crt.
replaced many in apple studiodisplay series.
if you look in the neck you can often see the flashover.

      Thanks kc8adu,

Thats sounds quite serious.... i think i might as well throw it in with a computer im giving away to someone....
I'll probably go back to using that 15 inch CTX monitor for the meantime .... It still works quite well and fits the table perfectly.... the display is for a spare PC in my brothers room anyway.... no one uses it.... apart from me at certain times when i'm really bored.

      Thanks.

I still have that monitor here except I've just taken it out of my shed after a period of storage.
The flashover popping thing still happens. I also noticed that the monitor is quite dusty.... could dust play a part in the clicking and popping noises??
What exactly is happening that causes the clicking and popping and can I fix this monitor in any way??

Dust can cause arcing from the anode cap it wouldn't hurt to clean the CRT off and see what happens.

The best thing to do is power the monitor up with the cover off and look for any signs of arcing check the deflection coil and in the neck of the tube as another member suggested.

If those check out then you have an arcing flyback.

I had an 80s Sylvania TV with an arcing flyback and it lasted for years it was still working when I dumped it.

Shortly after putting it out a scavenger picked it up .

Unfortunately I knew squat about TV repair back then man I wish I didn't throw that TV out.

I'm new to the forum. BTW love all the useful info u have here. I have worked on a few TV's over the years. I seem to remember GC used to have some high voltage corona dope you could paint on stuff to insulate it from HV arcing. I forget the exact name on the bottle. I found that dust would create a carbon arc path from the anode (HV connection on the neck of the display tube) You can clean the dust off the neck and try to remove the carbon path. However you have to be VERY careful since the anode will have dangerous voltage on it even if shut off and unplugged. I used to discharge them with a HV probe grounded to chassis. DO NOT attempt to try to clean any carbon paths around the anode unless you are completely familiar with working with TV HV sections. 40 K plus voltage can be present there!!!! Flybacks can break down too and spark as noted above.
