Re: Why does a cap vent?
Very informative thread!
on a side note
Eons ago when I was in college I was doing a lab project. I had an axial cap on a breadboard in a circuit and was attempting to take a voltage reading. The DVM counted down toward zero volts. Just be for it hit that magical number there was a very loud pop followed by small quantities of white hair like debris floating in the air. I had inadvertently put a cap in backwards and it blew up. One end of the cap was still on the breadboard, the other had shot to the ceiling and bounced back...

Re: Clicking and Popping?
I'm new to the forum. BTW love all the useful info u have here. I have worked on a few TV's over the years. I seem to remember GC used to have some high voltage corona dope you could paint on stuff to insulate it from HV arcing. I forget the exact name on the bottle. I found that dust would create a carbon arc path from the anode (HV connection on the neck of the display tube) You can clean the dust off the neck and try to remove the carbon path. However you have to be VERY careful since the anode will have dangerous voltage on it even if shut off and unplugged....
