Acer AL2416W monitor won't power on

My PC monitor "Acer AL2416W" has packed up. It is still in good physical shape and I am rather loathe to chuck it out. Was hoping through the advise and help of the many knowledgeable members in the forum to get it working again. I am a beginner wanting to learn more about electronics.

    Setup
-known working computer and VGA cable as replacement monitor works fine

    Symptoms
2 or 3 weeks before the Acer gave up the ghost, the OCD menu will come on on its own. This happened with increasing frequency for a few days. The problem with the OCD menu then disappeared and everything appeared to be normal. Following this the monitor simply died. On pressing the LED power switch:
    - the screen flashes very quickly (milliseconds). The screen remains black throughout and stays black.
    - No Acer logo can be seen with a torch
    - the power on LED never lights up and remains unlit

    Measurements
    1. Main capacitor after transformer C1 (100uF, 450v) measures 330v (UK)
    2. Measured all the capacitors on the power board with an ESR meter. They all appear to be within tolerance
    3. Because of the the way the OCD and power LED behaved I suspect the problem might lie in the logic board. I tested the 2 power regulators following the instructions laid out in post by retiredcaps

    Regulator 1(see picture)
    APL 111
    GJ90518
    pin 1 = 0
    pin 2 = 1.799 V
    pin 3 = 3.286 V

    Regulator 2
    APL 1084
    WJ85W
    pin 1 = 0
    pin 2 = 3.286 V
    pin 3 = 5.09 V

If my understanding of the data sheet is right (I could well be wrong however) Reg 2 seems OK. I cannot find a data sheet for Reg 1.

    Question

I am reaching the very limits of my knowledge of electronics and would be grateful for any help in further tracing the problem. Many thanks.

    Hello and welcome to Badcaps.

Holy crap! You provided information that usually takes 5 or 6 messages to extract from a new poster. Well done!!
I'm not too sure what to suggest, you've covered almost everything I'd check.

Because you're not getting a power on led, we can skip the whole backlights testing for now, and probably focus on the mainboard or power to it.
Are there any voltage markings on the connectors between the main board and power supply? You probably have 5v if you're seeing 5v on one of the reguators. Maybe check the 12v and 5v pins that are labelled on the power supply connector.
I'll take a closer look at your photos in a few minutes.

You may want to download the service manual so you can check the signals on the main board.

        Better than well done.

Better than a lot of others who should also know better as well.

Regulator is 1 good. Note the last two digits of the GJ90518 is "18" and pin2 reading is 1.799.

            www.ebay.com/itm/360661103594

            went without any bids.

Check with seller if the part number listed "AA68 VL-2402 REV:1" is actually AA968 (like on your board/picture). If it is the same board, ask seller to relist with a "Buy It Now" price and get it. As a bonus, seller is in UK.

I would personally spend $20 to save a 24 inch monitor.

PS. Note to smason. See the format of the ebay URL above? It is the shortest form I know that contains the auction item number.

BTW, this megathread on the monitor may have some hints

              https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9626

I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday so don't expect me to remember a thread running 3+ years and 290+ posts especially since I have never personally worked on this monitor.

Managed to figure out the problem in the end and posting findings in case it is of help to someone else.

Having looked through the various threads and suggestions provided finally narrowed down the problem to a, would you believe it, faulty on/off switch. Replaced switch and monitor now working. I am feeling kind of idiotic. Thanks for all the help.

No need to feel idiotic. I have made several dumb errors, but that is how you learn.

Good job on finding the problem and thanks for reporting back.

I hear that. One time I didn't have the power cord plugged in all the way. So then when it didn't even have the power led lighting up; I figured I screwed up something inside. So I tore it all apart again. Inspected all of my solder joints. Measured esr on all the other caps I didn't replace. Plugged in the cord to do some voltage checks. Blue led comes on. ooops!

The thought that the LED power on/off switch could be faulty did cross my mind momentarily initially but,for some reason, I simply assumed that the fault would be more complicated and so discounted it until, as Sherlock Holmes say.."when you have eliminated the impossible....". Thanks again.

Dear Hun and everyone else who contributed to this. I just wanted to thank you for this posting. With a limited electronics understanding, but competent soldering skills I was able to solve my problem which mirrored exactly the symptoms above. Having replaced all the caps on the inverter board, the config. had a hissy fit then blackness developed soon after. With your info. I tracked it down to the auto micro switch shorting. Replaced, now all is well. Thank you all very much again!!
