Eizo Flexscan L371 15" TFT Dim

The oldest TFT in the office which is an Eizo 15" shows non uniform brightness and is much dimmer than new. takes a while to brighten up the picture also. There are no other issues with the picture. I guess it is 3+ yrs old. cost a pretty penny when new.

Would this be the tubes needing replacement? is it possible to source new tubes and user replace? more importantly would it be possible to read off the tubes the part needed?

Well, it is probably the tube that is going...

Replacing it would be possible, In my previous Eizo there was a Hitachi tube... Just open it up and see what is inside there...

Though actually sawapping out the tube is allot of work... And I am pretty sure you will not find a new tube at a good price...

I'm suprised to hear that the monitor is showing it's age so early... I would call Eizo, most of their monitors have 5 years warranty...

i dont recall it having so much warranty, i will have to pull the files and check. that would be nice though......although it would spoil my hopes of a nice diy repair opportunity.

are you talking about a CRT or a TFT? i am talking about a TFT, i would expect it to have several cold cathodes.

i will swap it out and take it apart next week to see if i can see something.

Also check the caps in the inverter

if its out of warranty then the first test is the tubes and inverter.often you can swap the 2 plugs to the tubes and determine which has failed.
i change out bad tubes all the time.
first sign of a dieing ccfl tube is starting dim and pink/orangey.
i have a inverter from a scrap scanner wired to a 12v wallwart i use to test.
by non uniform i would guess the the top or bottom of the screen is dark due to the loss of a tube/inverter.

btw look to jkl lamps for replacement tubes.have to measure yours and know temp in deg.k
5000-6500k is most common.

I repair or replace many more inverters than lamps.
High voltage cap, fuse and drive transistors, lamps when they are shattered.

Doh, yea, ignore me willawake, I thought for some reason you where talking about a CRT monitor... Doh!

Rainbow; All Eizo monitors I have seen uses Rubycon caps, don't tell me they have begun using crap too?

I haven't seen Eizo inside yet. I hope that Eizo is still quality monitor brand - probably the last. I thought that Iiyama is good too - until mine became dim at low resolutions and recently a bulged capacitor blew (and it's full of G-Luxons).
I have some old notebooks (386 dated around 1992, 486 maybe 1993) and the tubes are still good so I think that they don't fail very often.

here's some pics for those interested to see what is inside. Per was right, Rubycon ZL, YXG and Nichicon. The panel is mitsubishi. The unit was purchased Feb/01 with 3 years guarantee. I got it apart no problems but aborted at the point of opening the screen because i thought i should read how to do that, it was not clear.

KC8 : thanks for the advice about jkl lamps and the inverter test. the lamps are not pink though they are just dim, especially at startup where they appear brighter to the left side. I guess they will start turning pink after some more months.
