    Zerox XG-91D Monitor Failure

I'm attempting to repair a Xerox XG-91D monitor that has been malfunctioning. Upon opening the case it was discovered that most caps appeared intact. The tops of three may have swelled slightly and there was a small soot stain on the case above a Samxon 150uf 25v.

Examining the board it appears to have the following

    (4) Samxon 1000uf 25v
    (2) Samxon 150uf 25v (both slightly swelled and soot above one)
    (2) Samxon 470uf 25v (one slightly swelled)
    (1) Samxon 220uf 25v

I'm gong to try replacing the caps and seeing if that helps and could use any advice on ordering the correct replacement caps. Should I try and match the same caps or is there a better brand to choose?

This is my first attempt to replace circuit board parts so any advice would be appreciated.

Looks like you forgot the small cap next to the large 450V cap. The large cap rarely fails and can be left alone. That leaves a total of 10 caps that need replacing. The Panasonic FM or FC series of caps are recommended by many members here. If you're in the USA, order from digikey.com. Use the procedure below:

Here's the best way to order from digikey:

    1) Go to digikey.com

    2) In the "parts search" window type: panasonic fm and select "GO" button

    3) Under the Capacitor heading select "Aluminum"

    4) The first two columns you see are capacitance and voltage. Highlight the value and voltage with your mouse and select the "Apply Filters" button

    5) You'll see several selections available. Here's what to look for:

    a) Look at the quantity available and minimum purchase. If "0" are available, then there's none to purchase. Some selections require a minumum purchase of a 1000 units, which you also don't want. I think you get the picture.

    b) height and diameter. Measure the original caps and compare to what's listed.

    6) If your value is out of stock, go back to the beginning and type in "panasonic fc" and go through the same process.

    7) During the checkout process select USPS First Class shipping, since this will give the best ship rate.

After a while, you can shortcut it. I usually use the following in the digikey search

        470uf 25v fm
        1000uf 16v fm
        etc

That is usually enough to bring up only 1 to 3 choices.

Took a break from this over the holidays. I'm still having trouble finding replacement caps. I found most of them but for these two, one of which I suspect overheated.

          Samxon 150uf 25v approx 8mm high and 8mm across.

For some reason I can't seem to find a similar cap on Digicom. Any suggested alternatives?

As long as there is room, you can go bigger in height. This Nichicon is 8mmx11.5mm. If your tallest cap on your entire board is 11.5mm or higher, this Nichicon should work fine.

The board is very similar to the Proview 700P and 900P,and there is lots of info on the site for these models.May be helpful to have a look, if the caps are not the only problem, and you don't actually say what the fault symptom is,and if the caps do not solve it, then the CCFL's would be my next port of call, as they fail regularly when used in the Proview models.
