    benq fp737s

Hey guys, got given a benq fp737s, plugged it in, saw flashes of the screen, out of range msg (probably coz of my vid card settings), the screen flashed and smoke started coming out the top! Filled my room with acrid burning odours

I opened it up, it seems the filter capacitor is blown: capxon 100uF 450V. I think it leaked a white plastic like substance over the board. So did three other (ceramic or tantalum?) capacitors (similar white substance - feels like rubber).

    Electrolytic caps all "look" good..

Im guessing something happened in a bad way with the transformer or power supply, maybe an over voltage caused by a short? Im not very experienced with these type of circuits, only small control and digital circuits. Any help would be very much appreciated!!

That's not a good start. No wonder they gave it away!

No, that is adhesive used to hold components in place during the soldering process. Nothing sinister at all.

Now THOSE are famous last words. Looking may detect an obvious bad cap - bulging or leaking - but many die without being that helpful.

Something bad has happened. The magic smoke has escaped. The task for now is to work out just what. At this point I suspect that "dag" on the large electro is a legacy of your removing it from the board rather than a sign of failure. Also, ceramic C618? near the heatsink doesn't look too flash either.

In your first pic, in the inverter section just above the left-most transformer, there is clear evidence of a cremation. The pic isn't particularly clear but it seems to have been an inductor. The top looks to have been rather toasty (sorry, Toasty) at some time. Also one of the transistors near it looks to be past its use-by. I presume these are pairs of 2SC5707's.

I may be out of step with many here, but I'd look for a fuse in the supply line to the inverter section and if it hasn't expired I'd pull it. Then I suggest reinstating the removed components, plugging the boards back and powering it up, being ready in case there is more smoke still awaiting its release. If no smoke, serious fault-finding can proceed.

If its blown the main filter cap i would check the bridge rectifier first make sure its working

Check 2 gray square cap beside transformer + rectifier + round white fuse + back side see cold solder & burned

Benq Zowie XL2540K / Power board failure / 6Pin-SOP-Chip identification
          by seppde
          Hello everyone,
I've got a Benq power board of a XL2540K monitor which suffered from a power cut and is since defective / won't turn on. It's got obvious defects, some blown resistors, some burning around the drain pin of a MOSFET...
... and some 6-pin IC I struggle identifying, that is driving said MOSFET.
The IC is labeled as IC601, so someone with a circuit schematic could probably identify it really quick, unfortunately I can't find the schematics.
In other power boards of Benq for which I did find the schematics, IC601 is an 8-pin NCP1200 PWM controller - I suppose...

Kiddie smoke alarm (120v with 9v battery backup) experienced 180v power surge (Newfoundland Power company).
          by Bubbsy 2002
Hi to all, I was diagnosing 2 smoke detectors that experienced power surge. I opened one up and found a weird fuse/resistor, which now has open circuit. I can't find this part.
Forgot to mention they both light up and I believe the test function works, but when I put smoke to them no alarm!

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

          Thanks,...

          High-ambient-temp smoke sensor recommendation
          by Behemot
Not sure if this is the best section, so feel free to move it. I'm tasked to get some "safety device" in case something goes wrong to insure a dry sauna does not burn again. This time the wall with stove on it has been covered with mineral insulation material as well as linings. (Harvia states their stove can be mounted directly on wooden walls! get that! ).

Idiots wired extra (UTP, get that second time ) cable to the sauna ceiling. Is there ANY smoke detector which could survive on the ceiling with up to 100 (120?) °C there, or just all those house toys...

BenQ TH681 Originally overheating now wont fire the lamp - Colour wheel not starting
          by AJ847.63e
          Hi All.

Does anyone have any reference materials or something I can use to try troubleshooting a BenQ TH681? Google unfortunately has turned up zip. I did find a service manual for a W series BenQ but that is pretty much useless, it's more a glorified user manual. A list of voltages would be great as I suspect my mainboard is faulty, the colour wheel voltage is not dipping like it should.

The one I am troubleshooting now was originally overheating after a lamp replacement. It originally would take 2 minutes or so for it to shut off and blink the temp and lamp lights...
