Pioneer A-449 amplifier repair, no sound (fixed)

This good classic stereo amplifier with 2SA1302 / 2SC3281 pair had no sound at all. Power ±42V OK. Speaker relays don't activate. It's some kind of protection. I check power transistors output and I find -42V at Left channel. Right channel normal (0V). So it's a DC protection going on.

No transistors shorted, neither finals or preamps.

I check for cracked solders (long term thermal stress). I find some suspicious ones, but believe me that I know when a solder is really broken, and in this case none seemed completely broken. Also, no changes when knocking the board.

Then I start to measure things randomly at L channel, diode test mode, specially diodes and low value resistors. I reach R247 (100Ω 1/4W) that reads higher. I double check and it's about 650Ω, but it's not burnt or bad looking at all. Same for surrounding components. I replace it without great expectations but surprisingly it's fixed!

    Very, very random failure.

Late '70 Sansui had that problem with fusistors. I bought an amp off ebay said to have both channels out. It has a fusister in each channel of the pre-amp and both read infinity. The others on the power boards read about 600 to 1000 ohms instead of the 81 they were supposed to be.

I've had that happen on an 17" CRT monitor. In that case, the resistor was a 560 KOhm 1/4 or 1/2 Watt. Wasn't overloaded or burned out. Just went open-circuit all by itself. I didn't have that specific value, but I did have 2x 300 KOhm resistors. The 560 KOhm resistor was part of a circuit that seemed to be flexible with values, so I soldered those 300 KOhm ones in series for total of 600 KOhms. Pressed the power button and hey, it works!

So yeah, good save! Old, simple, stereo amps are always worthwhile fixing.

          Mackie CR4 amplifier no sound
          by UserXP
          Hi, people.

I've got an amplifier assembly from Mackie CR4 parts. It's just an amplifier, there was no speaker housing, so I used my set of CR4s to test it.

Anyway, upon connecting everything and hooking the "new" amplifier to an audio source, the sound played clearly and strongly for the first ten seconds. I was happy it was working. Then the sound started to fade out during the playback until it was no more. After it had "dropped to zero", there were two very short intervals of sound playing at the normal volume, as if the amplifier was trying to...

[Marantz SR5012] Center channel keeps going into ASO/Overcurrent protection.
          by acedogblast
First off I would like to thank this community as it has provided me with great information that has helped me greatly on my repair for this Marantz SR5012 AV receiver. I am creating this new thread as the other 2 that I have created here has had their original question/problem solved and I plan that this is the final thread on my repair. Please note that this is my first time repairing audio amplifiers so I may not be aware of common issues and things to know.

Lets start at what I have done so far. Random speaker popping on all channels is fixed by replacing the 2 large filter...

How to bias a Plinius Odeon 6 channel amplifier
          by AudioGuy88
          Hi everyone,

I am working on a Plinius Odeon 6 channel amplifier. Not much wrong with it, but I replaced some caps (20 years old) and decided to check the bias current.

          The manual says

          1.
          Code:
[1] Check the right DC servo is set within its operating window.
Use VR2 to set TP5 to within –3.0 to +3.0 volts.

[2] Check the bias current is correct once the amplifier has warmed up, typically 15 minutes.
Use VR1 to adjust the rail current to 140mA or 52.5mV across any emitter resistor (35mA per
          device).
          I am assuming...

Reverse engineering of 18650 4-channel tester
          by spleenharvester
          Hi friends

I have reverse engineered this tester, schematic is attached and is complete except for capacitor values. These testers annoyingly have no model number but they are the ones you find on the first page of just about any website if you type in "18650 4-channel tester". There is also a 2-channel variant and a newer 8-channel variant. They are very cheap (about £15) and can measure voltage, current, internal resistance and capacity. They have a multicolour display for all these statistics. They also have terminal blocks so that if you want to use a breakout board...

Amplifier - bad sound when loud sound on bass
          by eduaqa
I'n trying to fix a M&S SYSTEM DMC-1which have following problem:
I'm using FM station to do this fix, I works perfect if volume below around 8 or if bass is set to zero, the sound can go to 20 without problem, but if I set bass to maximum and try to go over 10 the sound comes distorted ... I saw a video on YouTube the person saying about the main capacitors on the power portion, but I disconnect the main transformer and inject direct to the capacitors PINs my bench power supply -23v 0v +23v, but still distorted so I think the problem is not the capacitor neither the transformer...
