    Harmon Kardon Citation 19

OK who here knows about old stereo gear? I have this still "working" older Harmon Kardon Citation Nineteen stereo amp. It weighs about 50 or more pounds, and has huge compasitors in it. What do I need to get to use this beast? I have Polk monitor 10B speakers, and I think they would love the power. These 10B's are power hungery holes just like the older Bose 901's were. All the amp has is an on/off button so I know I need something ealse to connect to it in order to use it. What magic "black box" or "boxes" do I need to make it happen. Oh, and how should I "start" this amp for the first time? All of the caps look fine but its been unplugged and not used for about five or six years. I wouldn't want to pump any powerful bad wave forms to the good old Polks as I did blow a tweeter in the past doing stupid stuff like this. It took me a long time to find the original tweets to get them right again.

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

A receiver with pre outs would do.
I would have no fear of an amp like that.
If you do, use some test speakers first.

a few years back, a friend got his hands on an old McIntosh amp. We took it apart and cleaned it. Hooked it up to the big ass JBL studio monitors

well not knowing what caps are in it except they would be BIG ONES
and again not knowing if or how long caps can sit in an uncharged state before caps might need to be reformed (maybe they don't need to be these days...don't know)

          hopefully none will go bang

I would power it up and let it sit for a few hours doing nothing..possibly do it 3 or 4 times before you start pumping it at low level....yeah id use a pair of speakers you can afford to lose to be safe.

just erring on the side of caution here

And thats one BIG Amp wow

Hey willawake is that a strumming instrument I spy in the corner...looks nice from what I can see of it

Ive got an el cheapo china made Squier Affinity, and I can manage 4 chords on it LOL but I enjoy playing it...a real Fender or G&L would be nice thought

hook up some cheap speakers and drive it from the pre out on a reciever.
often see them with jumpers in the jacks.
            bet that hk is ok.
the very few i fixed had bad solder joints.

Looks like a beast! It should make those monitor 10's sing... If you're not a member already, head on over an join the forums at www.polkaudio.com. We have a very large vintage Polk following, and I'm sure the guys there would like to see your setup .

I started w/ a pair of monitor 5jr's, moved up to monitor 10's, and now have a pair of SDA 2's

Harmon Kardon AVR340 no sound on 4 channels
                by r2digital
Hello, i had this amp sitting in the closet knowing that none of the channels were working. After taking it all apart i found 4 bulging main filter caps so i went ahead and replaced those with low ESR kmet caps. However after doing this it only restored sound to Surround L, Surround R, and Center channel. The main speaker fuse on the transformer F905/F906 keeps blowing so i decided to remove all of the transistor's on those 4 channels and measure them. All transistors appear to be in good working order(turned receiver on with none of them installed and fuse still blows). Checked dual emitter resistors...

Harman/Kardon AVR 645 returning to stand-by after a few seconds.
                by PowellSkier
A Harman/Kardon AVR 645 repair has been a hobby of mine for the past several years. My latest attempt involved the purchase of a DOA unit for part swapping and testing. The original AVR would power up then shut down after a few seconds. I completely tore down both units, found a couple of bad components and reassembled one of them. Same issue, no speakers connected. After extensive research I found a repair document from Harman/Kardon that explains the protection circuit in fantastic detail and provides specific test points for each fault (power, DC detection, overload & power) and the voltage...

BASH Subwoofer Amp No Sound, Power Ok (Atlantic Technology 642eSB)
                by nobbnobb1
                Hello,

I have a really nice Atlantic Technology 642eSB subwoofer that I would love to get working. The problem is that the power appears ok (LED light is on), but there is no sound. I don't believe it to be the audio input board or anything wrong with the power as when in standby mode (LED = red), I can play a source and the LED turns green suggesting the input is being detected ok.

The amplifier is a common BASH design, my interpretation of the layout based on Picture #1:
                - Top most hanging board is the audio input section. Note I accidentally broke the crossover...

Kenwood KR-6030 vintage stereo ,Old Man Trying to Save a Buck
                by DrDos
Hello all. I'll try to keep this short. I have no knowledge of electronics. I can use a multimeter and am familiar with caps to some extent. I bought a Kenwood KR-6030 vintage stereo. It need work and so I thought I would recap the thing since I get power to the on switch but nothing else is working. No lights, no sound and so forth. I went to Mouser to order caps and I find I am way over my head. I not only do not know the type of capacitors I need but Mouser and digikey do not accept Kenwood part numbers. I have the info such as 220uF 63v and such but no place to put it. I could buy a recap...
