Altec Lansing iMT320, badcaps!

Well, when trying to switch this on it just buzzes whilst your finger is on the power button.

I open it up and this is what i find. How on earth do they blow in such a low powered device?

1) It could be cheap 85C caps.

2) Is this powered by an external AC adapter? If it is, that adapter could have bad caps in it.

It came without an adapter, i tried it with battery's.

Got it with a bag of docks, all faulty.

Mostly smd components too so gonna be a struggle for me.

Hmm, maybe the board's been crushed somehow? Doesn't look like they are just bulged - they are seriously deformed from external force.

I thought that too Tom. I think its a design flaw. just put it back together and looks like the battery compartment crushes them.

There also appears to be some corrosion on the board to the left of the ferrite beads right under the bulged caps. Not sure if this could have been caused by the electrolyte from the caps or if something spilled on the board. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to clean that off too.

It might be because they're Lelons.
That was common with smaller Lelon caps on slot-1 era boards, based on what I saw here.

How can I open the IMT320 to check the caps I have the same buzzing noise, I remove the 4 bolts on the bottom but it is very tight to open, don't know thre trick.

its a pain in the bum. got to remove the leather case thing. its stuck down with glue.

To anyone else reading this, there are also ten screw hidden under the faux-speaker-mesh on the front. You have to peel that up to get them out too. Mine is an IMT325, same layout. No bulging caps in mine, but it won't charge ipods or play through the speaker, unless its a really old ipod w/out speaker, then it plays very softly. Aux input doesnt work either. Power light comes on.

8 screws actually, not 10.

I have 10 silver screws (6 under the speaker screen, 4 at the bottom under the pleather portion), 2 small screws by the batteries and 3 screws holding the bottom pleather to the unit.

I did plug in the wrong AC plug and that's when the buzzing started. Batteries do the same thing so I'm wondering if it's the two small caps/diode looking things at the bottom that is stopping power from getting to the larger caps? Ideas?
