Re: are there any ipod techs here??
all right sorry should have just asked but i didnt see any "ipod" q's in the forum. i have a a 5th gen 30 g ipod video that does not power on with or without battery connected, to computer or plugged into power outlet. form the looks of the mainboard i see nothing burnt, broken etc. is there a fuse of some kind on these as i see lots sell in this type of condition on ebay? thanks.Comment

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
well... doesnt matter.
that socket is your problem.
like saying "my car is out of oil, but it won't even start!"
it doesn't work that way. the cable is both an input and output.Last edited by ratdude747; 12-31-2009, 04:01 PM.sigpic

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
yes, the other ipod could have a different problem.
back to the car analogy, 2 cars may not start, but one has no oil, the other has no gas. 2 issues, same symptom.sigpic

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
I doubt it's the socket. Your best bet is to find a replacement board on eBay or sell these off for parts.Comment

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
nope, i broke a socket like that on a pda once, broke it the same way, socket never worked. again. and thus i have a new brick.
maybe there is some sort of an error check the thing goes through before boot up. like POST messages in bios.
but yeah, its probably bricked. parts time.sigpic

He clearly stated that the one without the broken socket exhibits the same problem.Comment

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
yes, but what if one has the socket bad, and the other has a fried board. same symptom, different issue.
think about it...sigpic

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
Just because a busted socket was the reason for bricking your own pda doesn't mean a busted socket is the end all problem when it comes to other bricked portable devices. It's absolutely a possibility, but just because it was the problem in your case doesn't mean it will be the problem in all cases.Comment

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
but im saying that it will never work with that bad socket.sigpic

Swap the boards..... one has a bad socket, if he's lucky, the one with the good socket has a bad LCD panel or something.
Its worth a shot.Comment

Re: are there any ipod techs here??
I guess you need to first find out where the power circuits run what pins supply power it should all hook into the battery somewhere along the line.
Follow this all through...
Very much a newb here but the logic would be to follow the power circuit look at everything board traces solder points and so on. Things like flexing of the PCB board can cause issues.
It is probably a fuse or something of that nature causing a no power situation but what caused that there are people who know who dont care to share this kind of information cause they stand to lose money...
The other issues we are running into is SOIC chips lifting legs not always very noticeable for instance the one on that gold board I would for kicks slap a heatgun on that sucker for about 15 seconds as well as some of the other chips on the board without hitting any plastic pieces constantly keeping it in motion on a low fan or blow setting...
BGA chips are very poor as well lots of manufacturers are embracing BGA but they are not taking note... Most of these units now adays stand straight up like the PS3 and XBOX if you notice a lot of people standing there units on end this causes overtime the RROD or YLOD I believe you can try to say I am wrong here but I do not believe it to be just coincidence keep your units flat people do not try to make them sit up and do tricks cause eventually the heat will cause issues of heat creep ...
They are advertised this way to me more sleek and newish looking it is not good to stand your units on end unfortunately with MP3 units we do not have a choice.
In your case it looks like someone backyard repair man already tried to fix them and make them work then sold them to you on ebay but I could be wrong.
I am no expert all I can do is give you input hopefully it will be a bit of guidance for you or inspiration whatever it would be there is a way to fix this unit if you invest a lot of time into it. But without the proper equipment some fixes are impossible I think however if you do find the fuse or whatever it may fix both units so keep searching and please do share with us cause you know how hard it is to get straight answers on repairs people are greedy for that I am sorry ...Please note: I am not responsible for any harm caused to you anything discussed is just discussion. Before you try anything discussed be sure that you have the appropriate knowledge and safety gear for the job. Like with anything education and safety are first! Do not try anything @ home without it.Comment

by NorrecitoHi,
A friend of mine gave me an iPod nano G3 to see if I can fix it for him.
The device had a faulty battery and he tried to replace it but failed. In the process he managed to pull off the pads that corresponds to the white battery wire (marked with a red circle in the images)....from both sides of the PCB. Fortunetely he didn't damage anything else.
This is usually an easy fix HOWEVER, on the PCB, I see no traces coming from the VIA and after searching the internet, I've found no schematics nor boardview for this device. With the pads gone from both sides I seem...2 Photos -

by jaycee147Hi all.. don't even know where to start to search for this MCU. No markings on it whatsoever. It is shorted and now removed. It comes out of a Gear4 houseparty ipod dock speaker that also has Fm Radio and Aux input. 12v supply but chip is on a 5v circuit. Photo of said chip attached....
