Apple says older devices slow down due to batteries not iOS updates (yeah OK)

Here’s one of many articles about this:

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cne...attery-issues/

I think it’s such bs and we can all agree that older batteries are not what causes an older device that was running smoothly on the software it was designed to handle to suddenly become slow and sluggish when updated to a newer iOS

That’s like saying a PC designed for windows 95 will run windows 10 no problem by simply swapping out the power supply for a newer one

      I Think that read wrong.

Apple claims they slow down devices in firmware updates to PRESERVE battery life. So, no, nowhere near the "replace the PSU in a 95 machine" Analogy you made. The battery doesn't slow it down. Apple slows it down because of the battery.

They are still arses for doing this, and its most likely all bullshit. I mean, if they really where doing this for battery life, they would have it in a setting somewhere.

"Hey, this update is a bloated pig that will kill your battery fast because it pegs the CPU. Do you want to enable a permanent battery saving mode or deal with a 2 hour battery life?

Even still a new battery won’t make the phone any faster on software that’s meant for newer hardware.

Even with a new battery the phone responds noticeably slower on newer software that rolls out every year with the newer model

^ Yes. hence why it's BS. They claim battery, yet don't even check the age of the cells.

From what I've read it says the software checks the charge cycles and uses that to determine the battery's age

But what about people who have a lot of charge cycles due to charging their phones when battery is above 50% which helps lithium ion last longer.

Battery would have good health but indicate a lot of charge cycles

I do not think this is right for Apple to do this kind-A-nonsense and they need to get real
Ask us if want to add this update to stop this type of freezing up do to maybe the battery being week or not

Only a matter of time lol

This statement “When the processor demands more current than the battery can supply, the phone abruptly shuts down to protect its internal components, as was the case with the iPhone 6S forcing Apple to replace

Wouldn't this just decrease on time before needing a charge? They make it sound like when it demands more current it's causing damage to the phone

I think the argument is plausible but underhanded. This should be an OS option to choose whether to accept lower battery life or slower operation.

I would think most li-ion applications have a battery management IC that keeps track of battery health and could make adjustments automatically. It should know if a battery is worn or not, so if someone was babying or not using the battery as much versus abusing the battery, it should know.

The question is if *all* old iphones of a specific model, regardless of battery abuse, run the same speed. If this is the case, then apple's explanation is wrong, and this is a cause for outrage. And if it's not, regardless, it's still very underhanded as some people don't mind recharging if things still run at the same speed.

I first heard of this over NPR and the explanation I heard over NPR made no sense... crappy reporting. Boo.

Yes same here I heard different explanations which confused me at first which is why I thought they were saying an old battery makes a phone run slow lol I was like huh?!?

I don’t understand why Apple would even make mention of this. I mean if they’re going to screw people over why even give out an explanation (and one that clearly didn’t help them)

Unless they were hoping for extra revenue through battery replacements from people who weren’t upgrading their device

I thought most iphones have batteries that can't easily be replaced anyway, so they just want people to buy new phones out of warranty...

                            Underhanded and sleazy.

                            No apple crap for me.

They’re releasing an iOS update 11.3 in the spring to address it

“Apple’s next major update of its mobile software will include an option that will enable owners of older iPhones to turn off a feature that slows the device to prevent aging batteries from shutting down.

The free upgrade announced Wednesday will be released this spring.”

What good is that now when people were forced to upgrade their devices due to them being too slow lol

While Motorolas are notorious for reprimanding folks who merely use a charger that's not an "official" one...

                                  (id chip in charger???)

My Moto e4 may be going bye bye bye! An id chip in the charger would be a problem!

Samsung don't do that kind of bullshit, IIRC...

I suspect that, because apparently Android Nougat tells me that it would charge faster with the original charger or cord. Is that just a bullshit generic message from Android???

It is a generic android message when you use a lower amperage charger or thinner gauge USB cord that doesn't allow the phone to pull its maximum amperage draw. My Moto e4 doesn't give me that message with a "normal" gauge aftermarket micro-USB cable or aftermarket charger with an output of 1A or more (the factory charger that came with mine is 2A, but some e4s ship with a 1A charger), but does give the message with a retractable micro-USB cable (much thinner wire) or a aftermarket charger with an output of less than 1A, my old LG Optimus Zone 2 did the same (though it came with a 0.85A charger so it only displayed the message on 500mA [0.5A] or less aftermarket chargers).
