Presonus BlueTube... More like total crap!

So I have a Presonus Bluetube, a 240$ (on amazon, right now) tube preamp. So a lot of you will probably say, "I know of Presonus as being a good brand, what's up?" Well, let me show you a couple pictures, and give a review/story on this PoS.

So in late April of this year, my friend who owns a music supply store came to me and said, "Hey, I got this preamp that came back right after it sold, can you check it out?"

So I contacted the customer before opening it, and I was told that it was making a horrendous, fast paced clicking noise, and channel 1 was no longer functional. So I opened it up and found that the main MC33079D chip for the output had literally gone up in flames.

Well, there's gotta be a reason for that, or it's just a defective chip. I proceeded to plug it in - literal worst idea I've had in awhile. Immediately the clicking noise came on, shit started smoking to I unplugged it immediately, what the fuck?

Well, the clicking noise to me sounded very 60HZ, not 120HZ like normal rectified unfiltered DC. So I proceeded to check the input rectifier, oh wait, there is no rectifier! There are 4 diodes for rectification, only problem is they are all single wave rectification, what the fuck?

So one of the diodes had failed short after only 6 days of use. Neat. I replaced the diode, then proceeded to go online and search for the IC that had fried. It's 8$ for 72 of them. I have a load of these if anyone wants some. So I got it, Louis Rossmann'd it (as the picture of my soldering clearly depicts). After that, Huzzah! It works... Except the customer decided to return it and get another unit from another brand. Great.

So I go into the shop, tell him it's fixed. He doesn't really know what to do, so he says, "Eh, happy birthday, keep it." It happened to be my bday, and I was shopping around for a unit like this at the time, the stars seemed to have aligned for me on that day.

Now, here's why I don't like this unit.

    - The bulbs on the gauges have burned out. It's less than 6 months old.

    - The tube inside is cheap, doesn't sound the best.

    - The wall adapter gets too hot to touch most of the time, even when not being used.

    - There is no on/off switch.

    - I'm almost 100% sure the "Chang" brand caps in there are fakes, not real Chang. Nonetheless, why in a 200$ preamp, are there Chang caps, they couldn't even use something slightly better like Su'Scon or Ltec? Why are they not using Nichicon or some very good manufacturer?

    - The input voltage regulation heatsink is separate from the one on the outside, not attached even by thermal glue. The fets/regulators don't get that hot though, so I guess that's fine?

However, as far as performance goes, it's fine. The sound quality could be better with a better tube, but it's fine as it is. My main peeve is the quality vs price, this should be built so much better for the price being paid.

    In conclusion, fuck you, Presonus.

So it is not even 100% tube pre-amp.
The plate Voltage is what 48V or less?

        Measured with a multimeter, 45V.

WTF kind of tube is that? That can't be real. That plate/grid/heater array is BS. That can't be functional!

It's real, and apparently this thing uses 12AX7 tubes... Do I dare throw one in? I have a fucktuple of new old stock tubes, but I can sacrafice a used Sovtek to see if it even works. But yes, I measured the voltage for the tube, 45V on the meter, very stable too.

That's not... That's not a 12AX7. Not functionally anyway. Throw one in for shits and giggles. Real 12AX7 are rugged little bastards!

Put lots of lytics caps right next to the tube to keep them nice and warm.

Some gear undervolts the tube to get more distortion. I run mine off 325VDC lol.
There was AOpen AX4B-533 Tube PC motherboard (2002) with 6922 cathode follower I think it had 45VDC for plate supply. Sigh.

And don't forget to add an only style analogue dial for authenticity.
Yep, perfect way to sell an otherwise unimpressive amp with crap inside.

                        by DCJack
                        Hi everyone!

I managed to get my hands on a rough condition B&K 707 for "the best price" because it was not working. It's my first tube tester and I'm really wanting to get it up and running. I downloaded that manual that has the schematics and tested every resistor and capacitor and replaced the ones that failed. I replaced the missing 83 rectifier tube with a used but tested-good one. I also have a number 80 rectifier tube that I have used in tests before I found the 83 tube.

Initially I noticed that I was not getting the red on-light to turn on, but it...

                        ECH81/6AJ8 Vacuum Tube Question
                        by Schoenradt
Recently I acquired an Eico HFT 92 AM/FM radio made back in 1958. The unit has had some decent modifications done such as replacing the rectifier tube with silicon diodes and replacing the main filter capacitor with electrolytic capacitors. When I powered it up FM wouldn't tune past 105Mhz. I checked the FM tuner front end assembly and found a capacitor not soldered to the coil from the Plate B+ to and ground on the other side of the coil. Some calibration was needed on the trimmer capacitor on the tuner. My question is AM is extremely weak. When I tap on the tube I get all kinds of snapping and...

The Fatman iTube (OEM Dared, which also sold its own-branded version, the Dared MP-5) is a tube-buffered gainclone first introduced c.2005, to target the iPod market with a bookshelf tube setup. It became a huge success over the next ~15 years, selling over ~100k units worldwide to a market where it was often their first introduction to vacuum-tube audio on a budget.

One of the Fatman versions landed up for auditioning a few days ago, and I must say that I was impressed with its form-factor, pricing,...

While trying to fix a family members dead sub my Presonus Eris Sub 8 has decided to mimic gale force winds for some reason. I checked everything from trying a different wall socket, removed inputs and outputs, and checked to see if the volume has any effect (it doesn't)

I have read that the cause is likely a leaky DC filter capacitor which would make sense, but I don't have a schematic for this power supply and don't know my way around them well enough yet to know which might be the likely culprit.

I did also notice a few dry solder joints but would they cause the...
