It's the first time i hear of these things online and i am really wondering what scams will they come up with next...

Basically it acts as a PFC, but does absolutely nothing useful

The key word is how the customer is being billed.
"The ACCC's case centered on the fact that the Power Saver, a power factor correction capacitor, does not actually reduce the real electrical power consumed by a domestic user. Retail electricity suppliers generally only charge domestic consumers for their use of real electrical power (also known as active power), as recorded by domestic electricity meters."
You need PFC correction if you are large factory, home people has nothing to worry about for now which is making me wonder why they put in all these PFC circuit in the TV and PC power supplies. May be PG&E has something in mind for the future due to implementation of the SMART meter.

a 100A ceramic terminal block will deal with any "smart" meter anybody tries to screw me over with!

the reason many power supplies have pfc is that some countries require it.
so it goes in to everything.
gives wide input without the bridge/doubler switch too.
the scam box has been around forever in various forms.
suckers and their money....

Oh the BS that is smart meters in the UK. Not a legal requirement to have one, we all pay for them not the utility companies or the government and the savings they suggest they will make are now estimated to be an awesome £11 a year. At a cost of roughly £11B and 56 million devices that works out at about £200 per device. It doesn't make sense to sell these as money savers...

One definitely has to be a complete moron to believe that a box with two LED-s, one capacitor and a power plug could save electricity. How could it possible save electricity, if it consumes electricity from the mains for LED-s to emit light?
More than once I tried to explain this to several people close to me or just a people that I know. They truly believe that this works and no one can make them believe otherwise.
These boxes are advertised and sold in many countries(mostly via internet sites and guerrilla marketing). The people selling them are absolute liars, this is absolutely a complete fraud.
