Buzzing noise from the unplugged speakers.

Hello,

I have a laptop here with speakers behind it. The speakers are making a buzzing noise. When I take my hand and push a bit on the DC jack of the laptop (which is currently plugged in), the noise stops. It doesn't happen all the time, it just comes and goes. It's really weird, because the speakers are unplugged.

If you ever had a mini-din (like a headphone style jack) plugged into a speaker but the other end you just held onto, and you turned the speaker up real loud, you'd hear a buzzing noise. That's the noise the speakers are making when they make the noise.

What would cause that? I figure it's some sort of interference from the laptop but it's never happened until today. Thanks!

could be arcing in the laptop plug.
i'v had lots with bad or broken contacts in them.
the good news is the chinese sell cables with a plug on the end on ebay - the bad news is it's hard to open the chargers without damage.

I believe it's utility line frequency buzzing you're hearing and thus some leakage from primary...

I know this is going to make me sound like a freaking idiot, but I think my wife figured it out. It was only happening when the air conditioner was on and although it sounded like buzzing from the speaker, I believe it was something vibrating on the computer desk.

For some reason, when I pushed pressure down on the DC jack, it stopped. The vibrating item I believe was behind the laptop, my wife, Jess, found it. She came over and I was like do you hear it? The speakers are making the noise! Go unplug the AC!

I told her everytime I unplugged it, it'd stop so I couldn't tell if I was going nuts or if it was just me. Sure enough, she unplugged it, it stopped. She plugged it back in, the thingamajig kicked on, noise started up again. She came over to the laptop, looked behind it, found something there, picked it up, the noise stopped, and said the AC was vibrating it.

Ha Ha Ha HA, sometimes it takes a woman to do a man's job. At least it's fixed Spork. Now go tell your wife the cars making a weird noise and see if she'll fix it.

i'd rather have my wife make weird noises but after she gives birth of course. dont wanna be "whipping" my unborn child with my man whip or exposing the foetus to live pornography.

LOL! You guys crack me up! The car was making some weird noise as well! Maybe I should have her go take a look! She's got that one skill that I seem to lack, what's it called? Common sense!

This reminds me of a story. When I was 19 or so, I used to travel a good bit. My friend Dan and I were driving down to Kentucky (a 12 hour drive or so) during a winter storm. We were going to go splunking. Even though it was stormy up here with lots of snow, it was far enough south where it was like summer, no snow! We was driving on the high way. We didn't realize there was a state of emergency from the snow and we weren't supposed to be traveling at all. We heard this thumping noise. We pull over, get out, search the car, all over, but cannot find anything wrong. We hope back in, start going again. We figure maybe it's snow adding up under the tire well or whatever it's called. Sure enough, thump, thump, thump! So we crank up the radio. Time goes on, the thumping gets louder, so we crank the radio even louder! Finally, it gets to the point where the radio won't go no longer and that thumping is really loud. The car is now pulling one way (to the left I believe). We stop and decide we cannot go on without figuring out what the noise was.

I'm up at the tire, just looking, trying to figure it out and then I see it....the lug nuts were gone! There was only two left!!! Before we left, my dad got new tires on the car but the people didn't tighten them, they just used an impact wrench on the driver side one. They never hand tightened them!! They had all fell off except two and those two were about off! We jacked up the car and tightened them down. We pulled off into a city in PA and asked for lug nuts, they said everything was shut down. They said it was a state of emergency and we were lucky just to catch them, that they were leaving. We actually made it to Kentucky, believe it or not. We found lugnuts eventually, but it didn't do much good. Most of the actual thread on the studs were stripped.

Boy was that fun.

Gotta love that, turn the radio up. Good stuff. Man. I started losing air in a tire once. Found it was coming out on the inside of the tire, the steel cord was coming out of the rubber. Had to finish driving another 500 miles because of the fact it was Sunday night at 3 am when I found it in Alabama. Had to stop every half hour and fill it up at the closest station. Got 4 new tires the next day for $300 mounted and balanced. Sweet.

Lately, sometimes when I get up, I'll sit in a silent house for a few minutes. A couple times I heard a noise than kinda sounded like a mouse scratching. Given where I heard it I doubted it. Twice now I saw the dog at his water bowl when I heard it. The sound apparently is traveling about twenty feet and loud enough to easily hear from around the corner. Acoustics I guess.

I've learned over the years that if something doesn't sound right, it's best to try and figure out why instead of just ignoring it. Boy, when you're young, you just don't really think so much, you know?

Do you think the noise is coming from inside the wall or no? In my parents house, when I was growing up, there was something chewing behind the sheetrock. Never figured out what it was.

I hope, when you say you'll sit in a silent house, that's by choice. For me, nothing worse then being alone. At least you got the dog to keep ya company, you know? There are some people out there that actually prefer to be alone I guess. My buddy Matt is now like that. He's getting rid of all forums of communication, so people can't get a hold of him, and during the summer, when he has off, he travels te world, alone. Then he comes back and teaches up at the local college.

No no, I've been watching and the noise is the dog lapping up water. It's just traveling farther than it should and sounds louder than it should. It's definitely him. Just one of those things you don't expect.

I gotcha! I had a doctor that asked me if I smelled dead people in the walls once. I told him no. He said his mother used to. He said when he was growing up, she'd just be tearing down the walls, swearing up and down there where rotting corpses in there. I bet you anything, that's why he became a doctor.

I bet a lot of counselors / psychologists got a lot of serious issues, you know what I'm saying? Probably became psychologists to try and understand why they're so messed up.

Go to control panel - go to device manager - select the audio driver - click on update driver.

or

go to sound in control panel and ensure the master gain is not maxed out or in the red (test playback).

if this is a aftermarket sound card (creative or Realtek etc) use their specific interface/software. you can access this by just right clicking on your desktop and selecting the sound card manufacturer. Again, lower the master gain or update the software.

If this hasn't helped, take it back as there will be a hardware fault with the sound card or integrated sound card.

I can see him standing on my right about twenty feet away but the sound is on my right about 3 feet away. Just weird acoustics because of the furniture. Now, my parents did have a 100 year old house back in the early eighties. One day I was sitting in the living room watching television. I had watched all 3 of my family leave and thought finally all alone. Twenty minutes later I heard someone get up out of my chair in my bedroom. Walk to the door over my head. Open and close it. Then come bounding down the stairs and the sound stopped at the bottom of the stairs. I just sat there staring at the french door to the stairwell and never heard or saw anything more. After about 2 minutes of staring at the stairwell through the glass I went back to watching television. Eventually I heard the back door open and heard paper grocery bags crumpling. After I heard it twice I got up and went back there. I did the first time once a couple weeks before and no one was there.
