    reducing fan speed help.

    Hi guys; hope you have a Happy New year;

i have here a dehumidifier air purifier that i found almost new that i would like to use in the bad room.but there is a drawback it makes too much noise even on low speed for me that i can't go sleep,it has a switch with speed 1 and 2 and off,
is there a way i can reduce by half the lower speed,i was thinking of putting a resistor but i don't know how much ohms i should use,
i have here an example see link;but this is for 12v fan,i need for 120v fan.
    any suggestion would be appreciated,thanks.

Post a picture of the fan motor.

I'm thinking it's most likely a shaded-pole AC induction motor, in which case a resistor definitely won't work.

Thanks,i found this thing out in the street, and to trash it will go,no way i can sleep with this thing on, even in lower speed, and you're right the resistor is no not a good solution.thanks anyway

You might write Honeywell technical support and ask them if there is any way you can reduce the sound of the motor.

the fan exists for a reason.
try mounting it on rubber spacers.

The fan exists to move air to evaporate the water into the air. The more air that moves the more noise it makes. It has two speeds stock, slowing the fan further will make it somewhat quieter and isn't going to harm anything.

BTW, Ivtec, it is not a dehumidifier, it is a humidifier. It puts moisture into the air.

One other question is it the noise of the blades moving through the air that is the problem or the hum of the motor itself?

Or it could be a body part of a dead lizard stuck to a fan blade. I actually saw that happen to an air conditioner fan once in Louisiana. Damn near rattle the whole unit off the wall. True story.

Back to topic for a moment, he wants to know how to slow down the fan so it's quieter, ok? It's not a major physics problem.

It is not that it is a major physics problem, it is that he put down dehumidifier for a humidifier that causes me to wonder what the actual problem is. Seems to me the problem is noise. Noise can be cause by different things. Would it not be better to find out where the noise is coming from first? Perhaps the whole problem can be corrected by setting it on some Styrofoam a inch and 1/2 thick and one would not even need to control the fan speed?

it could be as simple as loose screws or cracked plastic posts letting the motor jump around in the casing.

we need to see in it.

1980s Holz Her 2420 belt sander - Only works when speed control at maximum
                          by Babbar
My fathers belt sander from the 80s which i very much would like to continue using has an issue with the speed control. The machine works fine on maximum speed but will not turn or give any sign of life when on any other setting. The speed control is a dial going from 1-6 although implemented as a potentiometer without distinct steps. I took the machine apart and measured each component individually, all components and measurements have been captioned in the attached pictures. The Triac did not get identified correctly using my cheapo component tester, i don't know if this is user error, if the...

old X58 triple channel board... memtest86 memory speed?
                          by eccerr0r
Anyone run memory speed tests with an old X58-based triple channel 1st gen or any other >2 channel board? The one I have is a Gigabyte I think.

Anyway I had four 4GB DDR3-1333 modules in the 6 memory slots and got around 11GB/sec memory speeds assuming that it went dual channel since it didn't have enough modules for triple channel. Now I stuck in two more 4GB modules, but they are DDR3-1600. I'm still getting 11GB/sec speeds according to memtest86...

Just wondering, anyone do memory speed analysis on these triple (and higher) channel memory boards? Are there any...

Maximum speed should be marked on network ports
                          by japlytic
I noted that a number of consumer entertainment devices have the maximum speed marked on the wired network port and considering that there are broadband plans faster than 100 Mbit, the wired network port can be a bottleneck since some routers do not have Gigabit (only 100 Mbit) support for the WAN port let alone the wired network ports.

One other thing: Certain low cost network cables only have two pairs which limits speed to 100 Mbit.

Dell ultra 7070 ,Foxconn PWM laptop case fan. Spins at 100% speed in failure mode.
                          by kleung
I wanted to add to the knowledge base about a PWM case fan that it can fail at 100% speed.

On my Dell ultra 7070 (this is a 0.6 L pc so uses laptop parts); I had the case fan suddenly go 100% and I couldn't control it. I disconnected/reset bios and it was only solved when I swapped in a replacement fan.

I have tested and there is continuity between the 4 wires pins and the circuit board.

That is the extent of my troubleshooting. I took pictures of the circuit board but don't know what component would die (PWM controller?) that could cause this to happen....

Basically laptop is freezing every time if nvidia gpu is enabled and laptop is on battery power, however it working just fine pn ac power

So i wanted to sort this out as thats quite annoying as i need to disable nvidia to use it on battery or use it only with power cord-i already tried change battery, update drivers, change power setting, update bios, install windows 10 and windows 11, but nothing helps it still will freeze on battery

What i noticed that cpu speed in bios is 1.70ghz but...
