I'm in the process of repairing a Sony DVK-2400. Yes, if you googled that it's a reel-to reel portable video tape recorder from 1967. Aside form +12v the thing showed up on my bench otherwise totally dead.
Anyways, it heavily uses the 2SC401 transistor. I've found at least one so far that is bad in the power regulation circuit and I cannot find a modern substitute that will work.

I've been recommended I try a 2N3904 in its place instead but I'm not positive that it's a close enough match. The link above also lists a few substitutes but a lot of those are also no longer in production either, or they're $5-$7 per transistor which is nuts to order considering I probably have more than one that is bad.
Anyone got and pointers on tracking down a substitute?
