My equivalent book states a BC546 as a replacement,
the 2N3904 equivalent is also a BC546,
(with different pin connections), and available via EBAY

Could I also add that the heatsink pads leak an oily liquid,
that can get under the IC's and give give similar problems,
wash/clean with isopropyl alcohol
