you can probably damage it by doing a dead short.

why not compare the coil resistance between the 2 units.

Re: Help with some old electric fencers

Would I measure the coil on the primary or secondary side?

        both, both are seperate coils.

The primary reads 27 ohms and the secondary that connects to the output reads 12k ohms.

Re: Help with some old electric fencers

            on both?
because if they match they are probably fine.
            btw 12000/27= a ratio of 444.4
            not allowing for losses - 120v x 444=53kv !!!

this is wrong of course, it assumes the 2 windings use the same thickness of wire resulting in the same resistance per foot/meter.
            but you get the idea!!

Yeah they are a few ohms apart but close.

So the only thing that could be a problem is the caps?

yep, fix those cans and recap! also check for any out of tolerance resistors.

what are the caps? we need to be sure they can handle some pulse current.

On the older unit both caps are 0.25uf 600v and on the newer unit one of the caps are 0.25uf 600v and the other cap is 0.1uf 600v.

not polarised, black mark = outer foil. I've worked on shitetons of tube radios with caps marked like that. (damn you Philco!)

get real - go buy some nice new polyester or polypropylene 600v caps.
those are for retro-radio nuts imo.

get real - go buy some nice new polyester or polypropylene 600v caps.
those are for the retro-radio version of the audiophools.

Calling someone who uses that junk a "radio fan" is an insult to those who know otherwise.

Yes, that's right- the old paper and "bumble-bomb" caps frequently get resold and otherwise passed around to those who think they'll "make their audio or DX better."

Alright, what does a redplating power tube sound like, and is it really "better?"

Those old caps were/are garbage, and belong in the garbage.
