    What is this component please ?

    Hello, i repaired a Toshiba 22DL704B with a 17PW80 PSU.
    I had a shorted diode and I replaced all 5.
    Upon powering up there was a feint clicking but no picture.
    Upon inspection i found some solder blobbed around the part with 100 on the top. I flicked it off (it seemed like some had flicked a soldering iron with too much on), cleaned up the area and tried again.
    Success, but there is a slight whine upon turn on and the component is a little loose.

    Can someone identify the part with 100 on the top please ?

    That's an inductor, a coil of wire around a ferrite core, then put in that black plastic case.

    Whining is normal, when electricity goes through the wire inside the inductor there's a magnetic field produced which makes the wire expand or shrink a very tiny bit which makes it rub ever so slightly around that ferrite core, and that's what produces that wining sound (the very small expanding and shrinking happens about 10-30 thousand times a second).

      Thanks mariushm, that was quick. I guess the 100 is it's value ? It seems that it's the top that is loose but it has the insides attached, i have put a small blob of superglue to hold it on.

        100 should be 100uH. There are a few different codes for inductors, it's a bit more confusing than resistors. For example 1R0 would be 1uH, R56 would be 0.56uH, 22R would be 22uH and so on. Don't know why they use R, like for resistors, but that's what it is.

        That particular inductor had another piece of ferrite added on top to get to the proper value. It happens. And holding it down with super glue like you did will work just fine.

          I heard R is used because L could be mistaken for an upside-down 7 or 1.

              Thank you all very much, something new learnt today. Now if i can just get my friends LG tv fixed lol...my day would be complete.
